Yet a title is not the music itself. Between an old story and the sound heard today stand written tablatures, changing versions, teachers and individual performers. This guide uses four melodies to show how those layers can be enjoyed without collapsing them into one legend.

Before a title becomes a story

Keep three kinds of evidence apart

Begin with three questions. What story has been told about the piece? What written version or handbook is being discussed? Which performer and recording are you actually hearing? The answers may come from different centuries. A traditional attribution can matter culturally even when it cannot establish modern authorship in the usual sense.

The distinction is especially important for guqin because tablature records playing actions more readily than fixed durations. As the guide to gesture, notation and interpretation explains, a score still requires musical decisions. Two performances with the same title therefore need not represent the same source or make the same choices.

Let the story open your ears

A story can suggest what earlier readers valued: being understood, maintaining integrity, recognizing seasonal change or facing separation. Use that theme as an invitation to listen, not as a compulsory programme for every sound. Describing what you hear first prevents a memorable tale from replacing the performance in front of you.

Historical caution does not make the music less interesting. It reveals transmission as part of the art. The site's history of the guqin follows surviving objects and texts; here the focus is narrower—how one title can carry story, score and performance together without making them identical.

Liu Shui: friendship and a changing stream

Boya, Ziqi and the person who understands

The story joined to Gao Shan and Liu Shui tells of the player Boya and the listener Ziqi. Ziqi recognizes mountains and flowing water in Boya's playing; after Ziqi dies, Boya loses the listener who truly understood him. The expression zhiyin—one who “knows the sound”—grew into a wider image of profound understanding between friends.

John Thompson's comparison of Liu Shui sources places that narrative beside a much more complicated musical history. It is tempting to turn that association into a simple composer label. The surviving evidence does not permit such a straight line from Ji Kang to a performance heard now.

Thompson's study of Guangling San starts from the version in the 1425 Shen Qi Mi Pu and examines differing Nie Zheng narratives as well as the later Ji Kang connection. Those stories should not be fused into one verified biography. “Attributed to” and “performed from a particular tablature” answer different questions.

Hear structure before assigning a plot

Rather than matching every phrase to an act of revenge, listen for contrasts: measured passages and sudden activity, compact gestures and longer continuities, tension and release. If a recording identifies its handbook or reconstruction, note that information before comparing it with another. A dramatic title does not supply a universal scene-by-scene script.

This method preserves the tradition's gravity while leaving room for evidence. It also connects with dapu: realizing an older tablature involves research and interpretation. The value of a performance need not depend on claiming that it reproduces an exact sound from antiquity.

Plum blossoms and a farewell at Yangguan

Meihua Sannong: listen for return

Meihua Sannong is often translated as “Three Variations on Plum Blossom.” In the 1425 setting discussed in Thompson's source study, the named material returns three times, largely alike but in different registers. “Variation” can therefore mislead if it suggests a later European form or constant transformation.

Stories connect the melody with the flautist Huan Yi, but the earlier anecdote about his meeting with Wang Ziyou does not itself name Meihua. A commonly played short form is connected with the 1864 Qinxue Rumen and can be traced to a 1530 tablature, while other longer sources follow another route. Listen for how repetition delays the farewell, but identify the version before turning that observation into a rule.

Make a comparison that respects the music

Use a four-line listening record

For one recording, write four lines: title and performer; source or version if supplied; one audible event; one question. An event might be a harmonic return, a cluster of sliding motion, a pause before a new section or a sung line. Keep description separate from interpretation on the first hearing.

Next choose a second identified performance of the same title. Compare one short span rather than ranking whole recordings. Does a returning idea arrive in the same register? Is a passage articulated as separate gestures or a continuous sweep? If the underlying versions are unknown, record that uncertainty instead of pretending the difference has a single cause.

Continue through the cultural pathways

Return to Guqin: Sound, History and Ways to Listen for a broader listening orientation, or examine how the instrument produces its sounds.
