It is a history of aromatic materials, heat and smoke, containers, trade, religious offerings, medicine, court display, household care and cultivated leisure. These strands overlapped, but they did not always use the same substances, equipment or meanings.

A reliable account therefore starts with dated objects, excavated contexts, catalogued collections and texts whose authors and periods can be identified. Later labels such as “incense culture” are useful umbrellas, but they should not be projected backward as if every dynasty shared a single system. This page offers a chronological reading path and marks where the evidence is firm, partial or open to interpretation.

1. Before a unified tradition: vessels, aromatics and evidence

Archaeology shows that substances were burned and spaces perfumed in early China, while transmitted texts record fragrant plants, fumigation and offerings. Yet a vessel found in a tomb does not by itself reveal the exact material burned, the words spoken or the practice followed in life. Form, residue, findspot and comparison all matter.

The vocabulary also changed. Xiang could refer broadly to fragrance or aromatic substances, while lu described a brazier or burner. Modern English “incense” gathers woods, resins, herbs and compounded products under one term. Keeping those categories open prevents a later stick-incense model from being imposed on every early object.

2. Han hill censers and the value of excavated context

The Western Han mountain-shaped censer, commonly called boshanlu, is one of the clearest early anchors. The celebrated gilt-inlaid bronze example from the tomb of Liu Sheng, prince of Zhongshan, belongs to a burial closed when he died in 113 BCE. Its pierced peaks turned rising smoke into part of the object’s landscape-like design.

Scholars have connected such miniature mountains with ideas about sacred peaks and Isles of the Immortals, but an interpretation is not a complete ritual script. The secure points are the excavated context, date, material and design. They show that fragrant smoke could be joined to elite bronze craft and cosmological imagery in the Han period without proving that every household or religious community used the same form.

3. Aromatics moved through several trade worlds

China supplied many fragrant plants, yet prized aromatics also arrived from South and Southeast Asia and, through longer exchange chains, from regions farther west. Ports, frontier markets, diplomatic gifts, tribute systems and private commerce all took part. “The Silk Road” is therefore too simple if it suggests one route or one direction of influence.

Names in old records do not always map neatly onto modern botanical species. Merchants and compilers classified goods by origin, appearance, scent and use, and the same name could cover substitutes or related commodities. Historical claims should follow the wording of the source instead of pretending that every fragrant wood can now be identified with certainty.

4. Tang cosmopolitanism: court, religion and materia aromatica

During the Tang dynasty, expanded connections across Inner Asia and the maritime world brought foreign aromatics into court, religious and urban settings. Buddhist offerings, Daoist liturgy, medical recipes, clothing and rooms could all involve fragrance, but they belonged to different institutions and purposes. A court luxury is not evidence for an everyday national custom.

Texts and surviving objects also show that incense could be heated, burned loose, compounded or used to scent other materials. Familiar modern coils and sticks are only part of the later picture. For the Tang period especially, it is safer to speak of plural aromatic practices than of a fully codified, society-wide “incense ceremony.”

5. Song documentation and maritime commodities

Song-period writing makes some strands easier to follow. The Northern Song official Ding Wei composed Tianxiang zhuan, a focused account of agarwood remembered by the National Palace Museum as an early Chinese monograph on the material. Catalogues, recipes, poems and connoisseurial writing place aromatics within court service, religious life and learned domestic culture.

Maritime exchange was equally important. Historian Derek Heng’s study of lakawood traces a commodity moving between the Malay world and South China from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries. The evidence shows changing demand and classification, not a timeless Chinese essence: incense culture was partly made by ships, brokers, ports and Southeast Asian producers.

6. Censers, boxes and tools reveal social settings

A censer’s material and shape can suggest use without fixing it completely. Bronze mountain forms, ceramic tripod burners, lidded metal vessels, hand warmers, pomanders and small study objects belong to different periods and settings. Soot, wear, inscriptions, matched sets and excavated location can say more than an attractive silhouette alone.

The same caution applies to images of scholars beside incense. Paintings and manuals can document ideals of order, hospitality and sensory refinement, but they are constructed representations. Reading objects beside texts helps distinguish a court commission, a temple implement, a burial furnishing and a later collector’s display rather than treating them as interchangeable symbols.

7. Ming and Qing collecting, recipes and imperial display

Ming and Qing sources preserve recipes, material names and equipment for perfuming rooms, garments and study spaces. The term qinan became associated from the Ming period with exceptionally prized agarwood. Rarity, origin stories and sensory judgement contributed to value, while substitution and uncertain naming remained part of the market.

Qing imperial collections make elite use especially visible. The National Palace Museum’s Scent to the Heavens exhibition brought together court agarwood made for display, wear and heating, including carved ornaments and coordinated implements. These objects document imperial consumption and craftsmanship; they should not be presented as a complete picture of how every region or class encountered fragrance.

8. Continuity, disruption and selective survival

Practices continued through temples, households, pharmacies, workshops and collectors, but not in one uninterrupted line. Political upheaval, war, changing urban life, regulation, industrial products and new religious conditions altered materials and settings during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Some knowledge remained active, some was adapted, and some was reconstructed from books and objects.

That mixed history makes the word “revival” useful only when its place, teachers, institutions and dates are stated. A revived gathering may be historically informed and artistically serious without being identical to a Song salon or Qing court. Continuity is strongest when it can be shown through people, objects, records and practice—not asserted through atmosphere alone.

9. Contemporary revival and new cultural forms

Museums, craftspeople and study groups now present incense through exhibitions, reconstructed implements, material appreciation and workshops. The National Palace Museum explicitly describes a revival of incense appreciation in Taiwan over recent decades. Elsewhere, local histories differ, and modern formats may draw from several periods at once.

Contemporary practice also operates in a changed ecological and commercial world. Agarwood scarcity, plantation production, conservation rules and synthetic fragrances affect what can be obtained responsibly. Historical prestige is not a reason to seek undocumented wild material. The companion guide to Aromatic Materials and Fragrant Woods explains those questions in practical detail.

10. How to study the history without flattening it

Begin with one dated object. Record its collection, accession number, proposed date, material, dimensions, provenance and whether it was excavated or acquired through the art market. Then compare the museum entry with a specialist study and a contemporary text. Note which statements are measurements, which are translations and which are interpretations.

Next, follow one material—such as agarwood or lakawood—through production, trade, naming and use. Finally, compare one court, religious, household or literati setting rather than blending them together. Return to the Chinese Incense Culture gateway to continue by material, form, ritual context and responsible practice. A layered history may be less tidy than a single lineage, but it is more faithful to the evidence.
","

Illustrated
