Their entries might distinguish names, origins, preparation, attributed qualities, uses and earlier authorities, but the sequence and headings vary by work and edition. Tea belongs in this tradition without being reducible to it: it was also a drink, crop, taxed commodity, gift and aesthetic object. Begin with our introduction to Chinese herbal medicine and history of Chinese tea culture, then keep those two histories connected but distinct.

Historical categories do not equal clinical evidence

Words translated as “cold,” “bitter,” “non-toxic,” “clearing” or “beneficial” belong to particular textual and medical frameworks. They are evidence for how compilers classified a substance, not proof of efficacy for a modern diagnosis. Nor does “tea” always mean the same material: fresh leaf, processed leaf, powder, cake, infusion and concentrated extract differ. This article explains records; it does not recommend treatment, dose or substitution for professional care.

Tea’s names are part of the evidence

Tu, cha, ming and chuan cannot be flattened into one timeless word

Early and medieval sources use several graphs and names associated with tea, including 荼, 茶, 茗 and 荈. Yet 荼 could also denote bitter plants other than tea. Context therefore matters: description of a woody plant, region, leaf, preparation and drinking practice can support an identification, while the character alone cannot. Lu Yu’s eighth-century Classic of Tea explicitly gathers a cluster of names and attempts to order them. Our guide to reading Chinese tea classics explains why that synthesis should not be projected unchanged into every earlier line.

A name may identify plant, picked material or finished product

Even when the referent is clearly tea, a passage may concern the tree, a tender shoot, older leaf, cake, powder or prepared drink. Harvest timing and processing can sit inside a name that later readers treat as botanical. Compare the vocabulary with the material sequence in skilled tea picking, fixing and compressed tea. Identifying the object is the first task; translating an attributed effect comes later.

The earliest layer survives through later witnesses

The Shennong bencao jing is not an intact authorial manuscript

The foundational Shennong bencao jing is traditionally attached to the Divine Farmer, but scholarship treats it as a composite early text whose original form did not survive intact. Much of what can be read today comes through quotation, commentary and reconstruction in later materia medica. It is therefore unsafe to write that “Shennong discovered tea as medicine” or to date a modern-looking tea claim to a legendary person. A later attribution is evidence for transmission and authority; it is not a datable eyewitness report.

Absence, ambiguity and retrospective citation must remain visible

Lu Yu’s Classic of Tea preserves earlier-looking tea lore in its historical survey, including material attributed to a “Shennong food classic” and a bencao annotation. Such citations are valuable, but they are also Tang evidence about an inherited past. Record the immediate work, chapter and edition before naming the authority it quotes. When 荼 might mean a bitter vegetable, compare the botanical description and editorial note instead of silently normalizing every instance to 茶.

Tang and Song compilations widened the chain of transmission

State and thematic bencao asked different questions

The Tang court-sponsored Xinxiu bencao of 659 enlarged and standardized an inherited materia medica corpus, while dietary, processing and regional works developed more specialized frames. A tea statement in one of these genres may describe selection, preparation or bodily response for a particular purpose. It should not be detached from that purpose and presented as the single “ancient Chinese view.” Our pages on the origins and traditions of Chinese herbal medicine and how herbs are understood provide the broader history without making tea stand for the whole field.

Song compendia preserve earlier wording—and its editorial seams

The Song Zhenglei bencao, published in the early twelfth century, is especially important because it preserves quotations from earlier works that no longer survive intact. A layered entry can therefore place multiple voices beside one another. Labels such as “separate record,” an earlier author’s name or the compiler’s comment are not clutter: they are the evidence trail. When a later work repeats the passage, ask whether it adds observation, rearranges material or simply renews an inherited authority.

Li Shizhen’s tea entry is a compilation with a point of view

Names, explanations and earlier authorities are kept in view

In the late-sixteenth-century Bencao gangmu, Li Shizhen places ming 茗 in the fruit section and draws together names, botanical description, earlier commentary, attributed qualities and formulae. The entry quotes Lu Yu’s description of tea as a southern fine tree, but it does not merely copy the Classic of Tea. Its headings and comments reorganize inherited material within Li’s much larger classification.
