That weighing is the heart of the classical method, and it turns on a single governing question: is the Day Master strong or weak? Almost everything a practitioner concludes follows from the answer, because the whole art consists in judging what a chart has too much of, what it lacks, and therefore what it is thought to need.

What “strength” means here

Strength here has a precise, technical meaning. It does not refer to willpower or health but to how well the Day Master’s own phase is supported within the chart. A Day Master is reckoned strong when the chart contains plenty of the same phase as the self, plenty of the phase that produces the self, and — crucially — when it is born in a season that favours its phase. It is reckoned weak when these supports are scarce and the chart is instead dominated by the phases that the self must produce, control, or submit to. The judgement is one of balance, not of virtue: neither strength nor weakness is good or bad in itself.

The month pillar decides most of it

The single most important factor in this assessment is the month pillar, and specifically the season of birth it encodes. The tradition holds that each phase has its season of flourishing and its season of exhaustion: Wood is strong in spring, Fire in summer, Metal in autumn, Water in winter, and Earth in the transitional periods between them. A Day Master born “in season” (得令) — a Wood self born in spring, say — starts from a position of strength, while one born “out of season” begins weak and must look elsewhere in the chart for support. This is why practitioners examine the month pillar before anything else; it sets the baseline against which the rest of the chart is read. The reasoning rests directly on the seasonal correlations of the Five Phases set out earlier in this section.

Counting is not weighing

Beginners assess strength by counting: three Water characters against one Fire, so Water is strong. Practitioners do not work this way, and the difference matters because it is where the apparent objectivity of the method dissolves.

Position outweighs quantity. A character sitting in the month branch counts for far more than the same character in the year stem, because the month branch is the season and the season governs what is possible. The branch directly under the Day Master, the day branch, is the next most important, since it is what the Day Master is standing on. Characters in the year pillar, the most distant, count least. A single well-placed character can outweigh three badly placed ones.

The tradition organises this into several considerations taken together: whether the Day Master has the season behind it, whether it is rooted in a branch beneath it, whether it has allies of its own phase elsewhere, and whether the hidden stems inside the branches supply support that is not visible on the surface. Each of these can pull in a different direction, and none has a fixed numerical weight. The result is a judgement, arrived at by experience, not a sum.

This has a consequence that deserves to be stated plainly. Because the entire reading of a chart turns on whether the Day Master is judged strong or weak — the Useful God, the favourable phases, and every conclusion about the person all follow from it — and because that judgement is not determined by any rule, competent practitioners genuinely do disagree about the same chart, and then read it in opposite directions. This is not a marginal problem at the edges of the art. It sits at the centre of it, and the honest classical writers acknowledge the difficulty rather than pretending it away.

The Useful God

Having judged strength, the reader looks for what the tradition calls the Useful God (用神) — better rendered as the “governing element” or “favourable element.” This is the phase the chart most needs in order to come into balance. For a Day Master judged too strong, the favourable elements are those that drain or restrain it: the phases it produces, the phases it controls, and the phase that controls it. For a Day Master judged too weak, the favourable elements are those that reinforce it: its own phase and the phase that produces it. Identifying this governing element is the pivot of a reading, because it converts the static description of a chart into a dynamic judgement about which influences will help and which will harm.

How time is read into the chart

This framework also explains how the moving cycles of time are read, a subject the next page develops. As the luck pillars and the years bring different phases to bear on the chart, each period is judged favourable or unfavourable according to whether it supplies the governing element or the opposite. A strong-Wood chart that needs Metal and Fire to keep it in check will be read as flourishing in periods that bring those phases and as strained in periods that pile on yet more Wood and Water. The whole predictive apparatus of BaZi is, at bottom, this comparison between what the chart needs and what each stretch of time delivers.

Two ways of choosing the Useful God

Even once strength is settled, there is more than one criterion for deciding what the chart needs, and different lineages prefer different ones. Two matter most.

The first is support and restraint, fu yi (扶抑). Here the aim is equilibrium: a weak Day Master needs the phases that generate and reinforce it, a strong one needs the phases that drain and control it. This is the approach the analytical tradition emphasises, and it is what most modern teaching presents as the standard method. Its appeal is that it follows directly from the logic of balance.

The second is seasonal regulation, tiao hou (調候). Here the aim is not balance among the phases but suitability to the season. A chart born in deep winter is cold and needs warmth regardless of whether the Day Master is strong; one born in the height of summer needs moisture. The practical reference for this approach is the Qiongtong Baojian, which is organised precisely so that a practitioner can look up what each Day Master requires in each month. Two further criteria appear alongside these: bridging, where a phase is chosen to mediate between two others locked in conflict, and the illness-and-medicine approach, which identifies the chart’s single worst problem and chooses whatever remedies it.

These criteria do not always agree, and a chart can yield one Useful God by balance and another by season. Some practitioners apply them in a fixed order of priority, others judge case by case, and the classics can be quoted in support of several positions. If you are comparing two readings of the same chart and they differ at the root, this is one of the two places to look — the other being the strength judgement itself.

Special charts

Beyond the central strong-or-weak judgement, classical practice recognises a family of special charts that do not follow the ordinary rule of balance. In these, one phase is so overwhelmingly dominant that the tradition advises going with the flow rather than resisting it: the so-called “following” structures (從格), in which a hopelessly weak Day Master is read as surrendering to the dominant phase, and various “single-phase” configurations. These special cases are a reminder that the method is not a rigid algorithm but a body of interpretive judgement, with rules, exceptions, and disagreements among schools about how to classify difficult charts.

Where the practitioner’s judgement enters

It is here, in the act of reading, that the skill and the subjectivity of the practitioner become most visible. Two competent readers can weigh the same chart differently, disagreeing over whether a Day Master is mildly weak or mildly strong, or over which of several candidates is the true governing element. The classical texts offer principles and priorities, but they leave much to judgement, which is why apprenticeship and experience have always mattered in the tradition. This latitude is a strength from the point of view of a living craft, but from the standpoint of testable prediction it is also a weakness, since a system flexible enough to accommodate many readings is difficult to check against outcomes.

What kind of system this is

That last point deserves to be stated plainly. The Five-Phase balance is an internally coherent and often beautiful piece of reasoning: it takes the seasonal logic of the phases and builds from it a complete grammar for judging a chart. But its coherence is a matter of the system’s own rules, not of demonstrated correspondence with the world. No controlled study has shown that people with “weak Water” charts share a measurable trait, or that “favourable” periods bring better fortune than unfavourable ones. The framework is best appreciated as a sophisticated symbolic art, described here on its own terms while remaining clear that its predictive claims are not established by evidence.

With the logic of balance and the governing element in hand, you are equipped to set a static chart in motion. The next page takes up the luck pillars and the annual influences, which are the machinery for doing exactly that across the course of a life.

Key points

The Ten Gods supply vocabulary; weighing them is the heart of the classical method.

“Strength” is technical: how well the Day Master’s phase is supported within the chart.

It does not mean willpower or health.

The month pillar, which encodes the season of birth, is the single largest factor.

The Useful God is the element the chart most needs to restore balance.

Incoming luck periods and years are judged by whether they supply or oppose that element.

Some special charts do not fit the strong-or-weak framework and are read differently.

Two competent practitioners can reach different judgements on the same chart.

The Five-Phase balance is internally coherent but is an interpretive framework, not a verified one.

Sources drawn on for this article include: Ho Peng Yoke, Chinese Mathematical Astrology: Reaching Out to the Stars; Richard J. li>

Ink
