Known as ze ri (擇日), "choosing the day," or ze ji (擇吉), "choosing the auspicious," it is the practice of picking a favourable time to begin something that matters: a wedding, a move, the opening of a business, the first cut of earth on a building site, a burial. For centuries it has shaped when families act, and it is still consulted constantly today — sometimes through a specialist, far more often through a printed almanac or a phone app that reproduces one.

What date selection is

The premise is that time is not uniform. In the traditional view every day and every double-hour carries a particular character, given to it by the stems and branches that name it, by the spirits and stars reckoned to be on duty, and by where it falls in the solar year. Some days suit beginnings, some suit endings, some suit nothing much at all. The task of date selection is to match the nature of an undertaking to the nature of a day.

What separates it from every other art described in this section is who uses it. BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu require a practitioner, a chart and an interpretation. Date selection requires none of these. The calculation has already been done and printed, and the user simply reads a line. That accessibility is why it is, by a very wide margin, the most used of all the Chinese divinatory arts.

The words, and the book

The vocabulary varies by region and is worth sorting out early, because the same thing appears under several names. The practice may be called xuanze (選擇), zeri (擇日) or simply "looking at the day" (看日子). The book that carries it is the tongshu (通書) or lishu (曆書), popularly the huangli (黃曆) — "yellow calendar," a name pointing back to imperial authority. In Cantonese-speaking areas it is called tongsheng (通勝), because the word shu sounds like "to lose" and was replaced by its opposite. In Taiwan the usual term is nongminli (農民曆), the farmer's calendar.

These are not different systems. They are the same body of material presented at different levels of detail, from a single tear-off sheet per day to a fat annual volume running to hundreds of pages.

How large this practice actually is

It is easy to underestimate the scale of this. The almanac has been, for most of the last several centuries, the most widely distributed book in China — more common in ordinary households than any classic, any scripture, or any work of literature. In many homes it was the only printed book present, and its use required no more literacy than picking out a handful of recurring characters.

The habit did not end with the empire. Almanacs continue to be printed in very large numbers across the Chinese-speaking world, and the material has migrated intact into calendar apps used by people who would not describe themselves as believers in anything. A great many people who dismiss fortune-telling entirely will still check whether a day is suitable before signing a lease.

The state and the calendar

The reason this material carries such weight is political as much as cosmological. In imperial China, issuing the calendar was a prerogative of the throne. To promulgate the year was to declare who governed time itself, and adopting a dynasty's calendar was a formal act of submission. Private printing of almanacs was accordingly a criminal offence for long stretches of history, and the Astronomical Bureau maintained the official edition.

The most consequential act of official standardisation came in the eighteenth century, when the Qianlong court commissioned the Xieji Bianfang Shu (欽定協紀辨方書), an imperially authorised compendium that sorted the accumulated rules of date selection into a single official standard. Date selection was therefore not folk superstition operating at the margins of respectability. It was, for centuries, an institution maintained by the state, and that fact explains a great deal about the authority an almanac still carries.

What makes a day what it is

The character of a given day is built up in layers. There is the day's own stem-and-branch designation within the sixty-unit cycle. There is the Established-Removed cycle of twelve day officers, each governing one day in rotation. There is the rotation of the twenty-eight lunar lodges. There is a large population of auspicious spirits and inauspicious ones, each with rules determining when it is present. Over all of this sit the solar terms and the lunar month.

The almanac performs this reckoning in advance and prints the result as two short lists: yi (宜), suitable for, and ji (忌), to be avoided. The reader sees conclusions and never sees the reasoning, which is both the source of the practice's convenience and the reason most users have no way to evaluate what they are being told.

The system has always contradicted itself

One point deserves to be made at the outset rather than buried in a later assessment, because it comes from inside the tradition rather than from any modern critic. The reason the Qianlong court commissioned an official compendium in the first place was that the existing literature was in disarray: different schools recognised different spirits, assigned them incompatible rules, and produced almanacs in which the same day was simultaneously suitable and forbidden for the same activity.

The official remedy was to prune the list, adjudicate between authorities, and declare a standard. That is a reasonable administrative solution, but it is worth noticing what it concedes. The contradictions were resolved by decree rather than by discovery, because there was no observation anyone could make that would settle which spirit was real.

It is not purely Chinese in origin

The system is a composite, assembled over a long period from more than one source. The rotation of the twenty-eight lodges absorbed material from Indian astrological literature that entered China through Buddhist translation, most visibly in the Tang-dynasty Xiuyao texts. Other layers are considerably older and native, reaching back to Warring States and Qin practice.

This matters for how claims about antiquity should be read. Almanac material is often presented as an unbroken transmission from high antiquity. It is better understood as a sediment, in which strata of different ages and origins lie on top of one another, some of them mutually inconsistent for the good reason that they never belonged to the same system.

What it actually does for people

There is a genuine social function here, and it survives regardless of whether any day differs from any other. Choosing a date is one of the more quarrelsome decisions a family makes. An auspicious day supplies a fixed point that nobody in the family chose, which allows a decision to be reached without anyone having to defeat anyone else.

It also does something for the person acting. Marking the start of an undertaking with a deliberate act of timing gives the undertaking a beginning, and beginnings are psychologically useful. Both of these effects are real, and neither of them requires the day to be auspicious. Much of the sympathy this site extends to the practice rests on exactly this distinction.

Where opinion divides today

Attitudes in the Chinese-speaking world today are more varied than outsiders often assume, and they do not divide neatly into belief and disbelief. A large group treats almanac dates as custom: consulted for weddings and funerals because that is how these things are done, ignored the rest of the time. A smaller group treats them as binding and will not sign, move or travel against them. A third group, including many with no metaphysical commitments at all, uses them as a tie-breaker — when a decision is genuinely arbitrary, an external rule is a cheap way to end the deliberation.

Commercial practice has followed the demand. Wedding venues, moving companies and construction firms in many regions price auspicious dates higher, which produces the odd result that a supposedly cosmological quality has a market value and predictable congestion.

One necessary warning

There is one modern use of date selection that carries real risk and should be named plainly before anything else on these pages is read: scheduling a caesarean section to hit an auspicious day or hour. The timing of surgery is a medical judgement, and moving it earlier or later for calendrical reasons exposes both mother and child to genuine harm. Where this has become common, obstetricians have said so publicly.

The same principle covers anything else where timing has medical consequences: beginning or interrupting treatment, scheduling an operation, delaying a consultation until a favourable day. No almanac is a source of medical advice, and no day is auspicious enough to justify a worse clinical decision. This warning is repeated in the honest assessment later in the section, but it belongs here too.

How to read this section

These pages explain how the system works, where it came from, and what can and cannot be claimed for it. They do not tell you which day to choose, and no page here selects dates or recommends a practitioner. Where the tradition disagrees with itself, that is stated rather than smoothed over; where a rule is a recent addition presented as ancient, that is noted.

Readers coming to this from the BaZi or Zi Wei pages will find the machinery familiar, since all three arts run on stems, branches and the five phases. Readers arriving here first will find this the easiest entry point in the section, because the vocabulary is small and the object of study — a printed almanac — can be picked up and examined directly.

What this section contains

Origins and history — from Shang divination about days and the almanac，

\
