This page turns to the practical question that a client actually brings to a date-selection specialist. Someone is not usually asking, in the abstract, which day is best. They are asking which day is best for a specific event and for a specific person. In traditional practice, choosing a date is less like reading a fixed calendar and more like solving a small problem with several variables at once.

First variable: the purpose

The first variable is the purpose. Different undertakings are governed by different considerations, and the almanac reflects this in its long lists of activities. A wedding, the opening of a business, a funeral and burial, moving into a new house, signing a contract, beginning construction, and travelling all have their own catalogues of suitable and unsuitable days. A day that is excellent for a wedding may be entirely wrong for a burial. The specialist therefore begins not with the calendar but with the question: what, precisely, is this date for?

The dependence on purpose is stronger than a newcomer expects, and it is the first thing to grasp about how the almanac is read. There is no such thing as a good day without qualification. A day may be marked suitable for marriage and unsuitable for burial, suitable for travel and unsuitable for breaking ground, suitable for signing agreements and unsuitable for medical treatment. The entry is a list of activities, not a rating of the day, and someone who reads it as a rating — "today is a good day" — has misunderstood the format before reaching any question about whether it works.

This structure also means that the vocabulary of activities is fixed and old. The categories printed in an almanac were settled in an agrarian, imperial society: breaking ground, raising beams, opening a granary, taking up office, meeting relatives, making sacrifice. Nothing corresponds to launching a product, publishing, flying, or signing an employment contract, and modern users map their situation onto the nearest old category by analogy. That mapping is done by the reader and is nowhere governed by any rule.

Second variable: the person

The second variable is the person. This is where date selection connects to the birth-chart systems described elsewhere in this section. In careful practice, an auspicious day is not chosen in isolation but is checked against the individual's own Eight Characters, the four pillars of the year, month, day, and hour of birth. The aim is to find a day whose stems and branches harmonise with the person's chart rather than clashing with it. A day that would be generally favourable but that directly conflicts with the client's birth animal or day pillar is often set aside for this reason. The most familiar version of this rule is the widely held belief that one should avoid days that clash with one's own zodiac sign.

In practice the personal layer is where most of the difficulty in family arrangements arises, because it multiplies. A wedding date has to be checked against the branches of two principals; if the tradition is followed strictly it may be checked against their parents as well, and against anyone with a leading ceremonial role. The more people whose birth years must be accommodated, the fewer days survive.

This has a consequence worth noticing. When enough constraints are applied, the surviving set can be very small, and the practitioner is then choosing among days that satisfy the rules rather than days that are good. Families sometimes find that the only permissible dates in a year are inconvenient in every practical respect, and the honest response — which good practitioners do give — is that the constraints have been applied too strictly.

Third variable: the scale of time

The third variable is time itself, at finer and coarser scales. Within a chosen day, some hours are considered more auspicious than others, so that a wedding ceremony or the signing of a deed may be fixed not merely to a date but to a particular double-hour. At a coarser scale, the specialist weighs the day against the month and the year, since the same day can carry a different balance of influences depending on the larger cycles surrounding it. Reconciling these layers is the real craft of the practitioner, and it is why two experts may recommend slightly different dates from the same almanac.

The scale question also determines how much precision anyone should ask for. A wedding is usually chosen to the day, sometimes to the double-hour for the ceremony itself. A burial may be chosen to the hour. A house move traditionally has a specific hour for carrying the stove or the rice urn across the threshold, whatever time the furniture arrives. The finer the unit, the more the choice constrains ordinary life, and this is where a practice that began as a way of settling a decision starts imposing on it instead.

How a specialist actually works

It is worth setting out what happens when a family engages a date-selection specialist, because the process is more structured than outsiders usually expect and its shape explains a good deal.

The client supplies the undertaking, the birth data of the principals — for a wedding, both bride and groom, often with their parents as well — and the range of dates that is practically possible. The specialist then works in two passes. The first is elimination: days carrying serious prohibitions for that activity are struck out, as are days that clash with the birth branches of the people centrally involved. This pass is largely mechanical and two competent practitioners will remove much the same days.

The second pass is selection, and this is where practitioners diverge. Among the days that survive, one must be preferred, and the criteria for preferring it are not fixed: how much weight to give an auspicious spirit against a minor malefic, whether a strong day officer outranks a clash, how far to accommodate the season. The elimination is rule-governed; the choice among survivors is judgement, and a client who consults two specialists will usually find the shortlists overlap heavily and the final recommendations differ.

The output is normally several candidate dates with times attached, not a single answer, and a good practitioner will say which constraints drove the choice. One who offers exactly one possible date and warns of consequences for missing it is doing something other than date selection.

What most people actually do

In everyday life, most people do not go through this full procedure. They consult a printed almanac or, increasingly, an application, look up the coming weeks, and choose among the days already marked as generally suitable for their purpose. The more elaborate matching against a personal birth-chart is usually reserved for events felt to be especially important, above all weddings and burials, and for these a family may pay a specialist to select and refine the date. The scholarship on Chinese popular culture records how routinely such consultation has featured in decisions about marriages, funerals, and the timing of major family undertakings.

Where it overlaps with common sense

A certain amount of practical experience has settled into the tradition, and it deserves acknowledgement rather than dismissal.

Ground is not broken when the earth is frozen or the rains are due. Weddings avoid the busiest weeks of the farming year. Moving house is not scheduled for the hottest part of summer. Journeys avoid the season of storms. Planting follows the solar terms, which track the sun and therefore the growing year with real accuracy. Advice of this kind is sound, and following it will genuinely produce better outcomes.

The important qualification is where the soundness comes from. These recommendations work because they track the seasons, not because they track the stems and branches. The solar terms are astronomy; the auspicious spirits are convention. Both are printed on the same page, which is why the accuracy of the first is so easily credited to the second.

It should also be said that the almanac's yi and ji lists do not actually express this agricultural wisdom. They report the state of the spirits and the day officers, which has no systematic relationship to weather or season. The two bodies of advice overlap in places and diverge in others, and where they diverge it is the seasonal reasoning that has the better claim.

What the practice establishes

It is worth being clear about what this practice does and does not establish. The cycles being consulted are real and regular, and matching a date to a birth-chart is an internally consistent procedure with its own long-standing rules. What is a matter of belief rather than evidence is the claim that a well-chosen day actually produces better outcomes: that a harmonised wedding date makes a marriage happier, or that an auspicious opening date makes a business more prosperous. No reliable study supports such effects. The enduring value of the practice lies elsewhere, in the care it expresses, the sense of order it brings to important thresholds, and the shared ritual of marking a beginning with deliberation rather than haste.

A necessary warning

One application of date selection carries real risk and must be stated plainly: scheduling a caesarean section or any other operation to fall on an auspicious day or hour, or postponing a consultation or a course of treatment until a favourable date.

The timing of medical care is a clinical judgement. Moving a delivery earlier exposes a baby to the complications of prematurity; moving it later carries its own risks; delaying investigation of a symptom allows a treatable condition to progress. None of this is the sort of thing that can be weighed against an auspicious hour, because the two are not commensurable — one is a measurable harm and the other is a convention.

Where an older relative insists that a medical event be timed by the almanac, there is a workable compromise, and it is worth knowing because refusing outright often fails. Let the doctors define the safe window first, and then choose within it. A surgeon who says an operation may take place any day in a given fortnight has left room for a family to pick a day it likes, and nothing is lost by using it. What must not happen is the reverse: fixing the auspicious date first and asking medicine to accommodate it. The order cannot be inverted.

Key points

Choosing a date turns on three variables: the purpose, the person and the scale of time.

Different undertakings are governed by different considerations, which is why almanacs list activities separately.

The person’s own birth chart is brought in, connecting date selection to BaZi.

Within a chosen day some hours are preferred, and longer cycles are also considered.

Most people skip the full procedure and simply consult a printed or digital almanac.

The cycles consulted are real and calculable; the fortunes attributed to them are traditional interpretation.

Sources drawn on for this article include: Richard J. practice.

","

Ink
