Every art in this category runs on the same two systems, which is why a practitioner trained in one can read the manuals of another. This page walks through the main arts and shows exactly where the vocabulary enters each one. It is also a practical guide to judging what you are told, because the surest sign of a weak source is that it uses these terms decoratively rather than as part of a calculation.

The shared toolkit

Four things travel between all these arts. First, polarity: every unit in the system is classed as yin or yang. Second, phase value: every unit also carries one of the five phases. Third, the two cycles of relation, which are how a practitioner reasons from a set of values to a judgment. Fourth, correspondence, which is what allows a value derived in one domain to be applied in another. Once you can spot these four moves, the technical literature of any of the arts becomes navigable even where the specific procedures are unfamiliar.

It is also worth saying what does not travel between the arts. The procedures are genuinely different and are not interchangeable, so a competent feng shui calculation cannot be derived from a fate chart, and a hexagram cannot be converted into a set of four pillars. What is shared is the vocabulary and the reasoning about relations, not the methods themselves. Sources that slide between arts as though they were one continuous body of technique are usually simplifying to the point of error.

How a moment acquires polarity

The bridge between abstract theory and concrete calculation is the calendar. The ten heavenly stems alternate yin and yang, the odd-numbered being yang and the even yin, and the twelve earthly branches do the same. Because any date and hour can be written in stems and branches, any moment in time thereby acquires a determinate polarity. This is the step that makes the fate arts possible at all. Without it, yin-yang would remain a way of describing things after the event rather than a value you can look up and compute with.

Phase values and the calendar

Each stem and each branch also carries a phase. The ten stems pair up across the five phases, giving a yang and a yin form of each: so there is a yang Wood stem and a yin Wood stem, and so on. The twelve branches distribute across the phases less evenly, with Earth taking extra positions, and the branches additionally carry hidden stems, which are further phase values held inside them. This is why a chart of eight characters yields far more than eight pieces of phase information, and why the arithmetic of fate calculation gets complicated quickly.

BaZi: weighing the five phases

The four pillars method converts a birth moment into eight characters, four stems and four branches, and then assesses the resulting distribution of phases. The practitioner asks which phases are abundant, which are scarce, which are entirely absent, and how the generating and controlling relations among them stand. Particular attention goes to the stem of the day, taken to represent the person, and to whether the rest of the chart supports or undermines it. A chart is not read as a list of eight meanings; it is read as a balance of forces around a central term.

The favourable phase and what follows

Most of what BaZi practitioners actually do follows from identifying which phase the chart needs, whether because it is missing, weak, or required to mediate between two others in conflict. Once that is settled, the practical advice follows the correspondence tables: directions, colours, materials, occupations, seasons and even names associated with the needed phase are recommended, and those associated with an overabundant phase are discouraged. This is where popular practice most obviously outruns the theory, since the step from a phase deficiency in a chart to a recommendation about wall colour involves several assumptions that no source demonstrates.

Zi Wei Dou Shu: phases behind the stars

Purple star astrology looks quite different, since its surface content is a set of named stars placed in twelve palaces. The underlying machinery is still the same, however. Each star carries a phase and a polarity, each palace carries a branch, and the interpretation of a star in a palace depends partly on whether the phases involved generate or control one another. A star described as favourable can be weakened by sitting in a palace whose phase controls it. So the difference between this system and BaZi is one of surface vocabulary and procedure rather than of foundations.

Feng shui: form, material and direction

In the form-reading side of feng shui, phases are assigned to shapes and materials. A pointed or triangular form reads as Fire, a tall column as Wood, a low flat mass as Earth, a rounded or domed form as Metal, an irregular or wavy form as Water. Directions carry phases too, with east as Wood, south as Fire, west as Metal, north as Water and the centre as Earth. The practitioner then considers the relations: a Fire-shaped structure in a Metal direction is a controlling relation and would be assessed unfavourably for whatever that direction governs.

Feng shui: phases moving in time

The compass side of the practice adds time. Numbers derived from the Luoshu are assigned to the nine sectors of a site and are treated as shifting according to year, month and construction date, each number carrying a phase and a character. The judgment then concerns how the phase of a sector's current number relates to the phase of its fixed direction and to the use the space is put to. This is the most technical and least intuitive part of feng shui, and it is where the calendar, the diagrams and the phases all combine into a single calculation.

Date selection: matching day to deed

Date selection asks what phase character a given day carries and whether it suits the intended activity. A day whose phase generates the phase of the undertaking is favoured; one whose phase controls it is avoided. Because a person also has a phase profile from their birth chart, a day can be favourable in general and unsuitable for a particular individual, which is why serious practice consults the chart rather than the almanac alone. The almanacs still printed today are compressed summaries of exactly this reasoning, with the calculation already performed and only the conclusions listed.

Divination: polarity in the lines

The Yijing rests directly on polarity, since each of the six lines of a hexagram is either yin or yang and the whole system is generated from that binary distinction. Trigrams also carry phase values, so a hexagram can be read as a relation between the phases of its two constituent trigrams as well as through the text. Later divination systems such as the six-line method make the phase reasoning explicit, assigning branches and phases to each line and judging the answer largely by the relations between them and the phase of the day on which the question was asked.

Physiognomy: reading phase in a face

In face and palm reading, the five phases supply a typology. A person may be described as a Wood type, tall and lean with prominent sinews, or an Earth type, broad and solid, and each type is held to carry characteristic tendencies and to be suited to particular circumstances. Features are also assigned to phases and their proportions assessed for balance. The reasoning is the same as in feng shui, that visible form indicates underlying process, and the same objection applies with more force, since appearance correlates with so many ordinary things that a reader has plenty to work with regardless.

The same vocabulary in medicine and alchemy

It is worth noticing that this vocabulary is not confined to the calculation arts. Chinese medicine uses the identical scheme to organise organs, tissues, emotions and treatments. Internal alchemy uses it to describe the transformation of what practitioners call the three treasures, and its texts routinely describe operations in terms of stems, branches, trigrams and phases. This is why the same person could plausibly be a physician, a geomancer and an alchemist, and why a Taoist monastery might house all three activities without any sense of mixing disciplines.

How to judge what you are told

A practical test: ask whether the terms are doing calculational work. In a serious source, a phase value is derived from a stated input by a stated method, and the conclusion follows from relations among derived values, so you can check the steps even if you doubt the premises. In a weak source, the terms appear as labels attached to conclusions reached some other way, and no procedure is given. The second kind of writing is very common in international popular material. Whatever you think of the framework, it deserves to be represented by its actual method rather than by its vocabulary used as ornament.

A second test is whether the source acknowledges disagreement. The technical literature of every one of these arts contains rival schools with incompatible methods, and any writer who presents a single settled procedure as the tradition is either unaware of this or concealing it.

Key points

All these arts run on four shared moves: polarity, phase value, the two cycles of relation, and correspondence.

The stem-and-branch calendar is what turns yin-yang and phase from descriptions into computable values.

BaZi weighs the distribution of phases around the day stem; Zi Wei uses the same machinery beneath a vocabulary of stars.

Feng shui assigns phases to forms and directions and, on the compass side, tracks
