A finished chart is not a list of separate facts but a single map, in which every star sits in a particular palace, every palace answers to certain other palaces, and the whole arrangement is read together. This page describes how such a chart is cast from a person’s birth data and how a reader begins to draw meaning from it.

Start with the birth moment

The starting point is the moment of birth. Traditional practice requires the year, month, day, and hour of birth according to the Chinese lunar calendar, and the hour is given in one of the twelve two-hour periods rather than by the clock. Converting a modern birth time into these terms is the first step, and it is also the first place where errors creep in: an uncertain birth hour, or a careless conversion from the solar to the lunar calendar, will shift the entire chart. For this reason careful practitioners treat the birth time as something to be checked rather than assumed.

Fixing the Life Palace

The first substantive step is locating the Life Palace, because every other palace is positioned relative to it. Two pieces of data determine it: the lunar month of birth and the birth hour.

The procedure is a counting operation around the ring of twelve compartments. Beginning from a fixed starting compartment, you count forward by the number of the lunar month, then count backward from the position reached by the number of the birth hour, and the compartment you land on is the Life Palace. The Body Palace is found by the same counting in the same direction for the month and then forward rather than backward for the hour, which is why the two palaces are always related in a fixed way.

Two things about this deserve notice. The first is that the Life Palace depends on nothing but month and hour — not the year, not the day. A great many people therefore share a Life Palace position, and the individuality of a chart comes almost entirely from the later steps. The second is that this is straightforward counting with no astronomical content whatever; the operation would work identically if the twelve compartments were labelled with letters.

Laying out the twelve palaces

With the Life Palace fixed, the reader lays out the twelve palaces around the chart. The chart is drawn as a grid of twelve cells, each standing for one of the earthly branches, and the sequence of palaces is laid onto these cells in a fixed order beginning from the Life Palace, with the remaining eleven palaces following around the ring in order. The Body Palace, located by the companion count described above, marks a second emphasis in the life, one that tends to come forward in the later years.

The Five-Element bureau

With the frame in place, the reader determines what is called the Five-Element bureau. This is a category assigned to the chart as a whole, named for one of the five elements, and it is derived from the relationship between the stems and branches at the Life Palace. The bureau matters for two reasons. It sets the number used to place the leading star of the whole system, and it fixes the ages at which the decade-long periods of life begin. Two charts with the same palace layout but different bureaus will therefore run on slightly different schedules, a detail that shows how tightly the parts of the system are meshed together.

Placing the stars

Placing the stars comes next, and here the system’s reputation for intricacy is earned. The emperor star is set first, in a position determined by the bureau and the birth day; from its position the other stars of its group follow by fixed relationships. A second major star anchors a second group, and its placement likewise generates the stars that travel with it. The auxiliary and minor stars are then added, each by its own rule keyed to the birth year, month, day, or hour. When the work is done every one of the twelve palaces holds some combination of stars, and no two charts of different births will hold quite the same pattern.

Noting brightness

The reader must also note the brightness of each major star, since the same star carries a different tone depending on the palace it occupies. A star described as at its height in one place and as weakened in another is understood to express its qualities strongly in the first case and only faintly, or with difficulty, in the second. These brightness ratings are written into the chart alongside the stars themselves, and an experienced reader takes them in at a glance.

Where casting conventions vary

Casting is usually described as mechanical, and for most birth data it is. A few edge cases are handled through more than one established convention, however, and these deserve to be stated because they can change the chart rather than merely its interpretation.

The largest concerns the intercalary month. The lunar calendar inserts an extra month roughly every three years to keep pace with the solar year, and a person can be born in one. Since the Life Palace is counted from the lunar month number, a convention is needed. One method treats the intercalary month as a repetition of the month it follows. Another divides it, placing first-half births with the preceding month and second-half births with the following one. A third uses the solar terms for these cases. Each method is internally consistent but can produce a different Life Palace. A responsible practitioner states the convention used and, where useful, compares the resulting charts rather than presenting one convention as universal.

The second concerns the midnight boundary, which also appears in BaZi. A birth between eleven at night and midnight belongs to the Rat hour, but lineages use two conventions for whether it belongs to the current lunar day or the next. Since the day determines the placement of Zi Wei, the chosen convention should be recorded clearly.

Third, and less often discussed, is whether clock time is adjusted to true solar time before deriving the hour. Some traditions make the correction; others retain standard civil time. Both approaches can be followed consistently when the choice is stated.

For most births, the established conventions produce the same chart. In leap-month, midnight-boundary and certain location-sensitive cases, the result depends on the convention selected. The careful approach is to name that convention, explain its effect and, when it materially changes the chart, show the alternatives.

The new situation software has created

Until recently, casting a chart by hand was a real skill that took time and care, and it acted as a filter: a person who could produce a correct chart had necessarily learned the structure of the system while doing it. Free applications have removed that step entirely, and the consequences are worth thinking about.

The first is that different programs produce different charts. Because the leap-month question and the midnight question are unresolved, and because schools include different sets of minor stars, two applications given identical birth data can return charts that differ in the Life Palace, in the star placements, or in which stars appear at all. Users generally do not know which conventions their software has adopted, and the settings are often not exposed. A chart from an app is not a neutral fact; it embodies choices, and you should find out which ones.

The second is the rise of automatically generated interpretation. Many programs print a reading alongside the chart by looking up each star-and-palace pairing and joining the results. The output may read fluently, but it is assembled from independent templates and cannot weigh one factor against another. It can therefore place characterisations side by side without explaining how they relate. Such text is best treated as a set of starting notes rather than a complete interpretation of the tradition.

The third consequence is subtler. Because charts are now free and instant, people cast them for themselves, for partners, for job candidates, and consult them frequently rather than at the few decisive moments in a life for which the art was historically used. Whatever one thinks of the system, that is a change in how it functions, and it makes the cautions elsewhere in this section more rather than less relevant.

Reading begins only when casting ends

Only when the chart is fully cast does interpretation begin, and the first principle of reading is that no palace is judged alone. Each palace stands in fixed relationships with three others, forming a group of four that must be weighed together: the palace opposite it across the chart, and the two that sit at the corners of the same triangle. A reader who wants to understand a person’s career, for instance, does not look only at the Career Palace but also at the palace facing it and at the two that support it, since the stars in those places pour their influence into the palace under study. This habit of reading in groups is what keeps the system from collapsing into a simple catalogue of isolated meanings.

The Life Palace and its opposite

The Life Palace and the palace facing it are given the first and closest attention, because together they are taken to describe the person’s fundamental character and the shape of the life as a whole. From there the reader moves outward, examining each of the other palaces in turn for the particular area it governs, always noting which stars occupy it, how bright those stars are, and what reaches it from the palaces linked to it. A strong, well-placed star in a palace is read one way; the same palace left empty of major stars, so that it must borrow meaning from the palace facing it, is read another. Gradually a picture is built up, part by part, until the reader can speak about the person’s temperament, relationships, work, and circumstances as a connected whole rather than a set of separate verdicts.

What is mechanical and what is not

It is worth being candid about what this reading is and is not. The casting of the chart is a mechanical procedure: given the same birth data and the same rules, two competent readers will produce the same chart. The interpretation, by contrast, is a craft, and it varies from reader to reader. The meanings attached to stars and palaces come from tradition and from each teacher’s accumulated experience, not from any tested body of evidence, and different schools weigh the same features differently. A chart should therefore be understood as a structured framework for reflection, drawn up according to fixed rules, rather than as a measuring instrument that reveals fixed facts about a life. Read in that spirit, the process of casting and interpreting a chart is a disciplined and coherent tradition; read as prediction, it claims more than it can support.

Key points

A finished chart is one map, not a list of separate facts.

Casting begins from the birth year, month, day and two-hour period in the lunar calendar.

The twelve palaces are fixed first, drawn as a grid of twelve cells.

A Five-Element bureau is then assigned, which governs how the stars are placed.

The emperor star is set first and the others follow from it by fixed rules.

Each major star’s brightness is noted, since position changes its tone.

Interpretation starts only once the chart is complete, and no palace is read alone.

The Life Palace and the palace facing it receive the closest attention.

Casting is mechanical and reproducible; interpretation is a matter of judgement.

Sources drawn on for this article include: the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quanshu and later commentarial and instructional literature on chart casting; Richard J. constructed.

","
