They are the structural heart of the system, and understanding them is the first real step in understanding how a chart is read. Where the Four Pillars compress a life into a single grid of eight characters, Zi Wei Dou Shu spreads it out into twelve distinct compartments, each assigned to a particular domain of human experience. The chart is drawn as a ring — traditionally a square divided into twelve cells around the edge — and each cell is a palace.

Anchored to the twelve Branches

The palaces are anchored to the twelve Earthly Branches, so that the ring of palaces corresponds to the familiar cycle of Rat, Ox, Tiger, and the rest. This is the link back to the calendar and to the sexagenary system described elsewhere in this section: the same twelve Branches that mark the double-hours and the months here mark the twelve positions of the chart. Onto this fixed ring of Branches, the system lays a second layer of meaning — the twelve life-domains — and the way these two layers are aligned depends on the birth data, which is what makes each chart individual.

The twelve life-domains

The twelve life-domains are the substance of the reading, and their names give a clear sense of the system’s scope. The first and most important is the Life Palace (命宮), which describes the core self — temperament, disposition, and the overall shape of the life. Around it run the others: the Palace of Siblings (兄弟宮); the Palace of the Spouse or Marriage (夫妻宮); the Palace of Children (子女宮); the Palace of Wealth (財帛宮); the Palace of Health or Illness (疾厄宮); the Palace of Travel or Movement (遷移宮); the Palace of Friends and Subordinates (僕役宮, sometimes called the Palace of Companions); the Palace of Career or Officialdom (官祿宮); the Palace of Property (田宅宮); the Palace of Fortune and Virtue (福德宮), concerning inner life and enjoyment; and the Palace of Parents (父母宮). A thirteenth designation, the Body Palace (身宮), does not occupy its own cell but overlays one of the twelve, marking an area of especially strong emphasis in the second half of life.

A checklist of what mattered

Read together, these palaces amount to a comprehensive checklist of the domains a traditional society considered central to a life: who you are, your family of origin and your marriage, your children, your money and property, your health, your work, your travels, your friendships, and your inner contentment. Part of the appeal of Zi Wei Dou Shu, compared with the more abstract elemental reasoning of BaZi, is exactly this concreteness. A reader can point to a single palace and speak directly about marriage or career, rather than inferring everything from the interaction of five phases. The system feels, to many, more like reading a detailed map than interpreting a code.

Palaces opposite one another

The palaces are not read in isolation from one another. A central principle of the system is that palaces sitting opposite each other across the ring, and those at the triangular points from a given palace, form relationships that must be read together. The palace directly across from the Life Palace, for example — the Travel Palace — is held to illuminate the self by showing how the person meets the outside world, and the trio of palaces at the triangular positions is read as a mutually reinforcing set. This means a competent reading is never a matter of examining one palace alone; it is a matter of seeing how the twelve stand in relation to one another, so that wealth is read against career, marriage against travel, and so on. The web of relationships among the palaces is as important as the palaces themselves.

The triangle and the four positions

Palaces are never read in isolation, and the standard grouping goes beyond the opposite pair. The technical term is san fang si zheng (三方四正), the three sides and four positions, and it names the set of four palaces always considered together when examining any one of them.

The four are the palace itself, the palace directly opposite it, and the two palaces that form an equilateral triangle with it — those four and eight positions around the ring. Because the twelve palaces are anchored to the twelve branches, and the branches already group themselves into four sets of three by the traditional trine relationships, this grouping is not arbitrary within the system’s own logic: it inherits the branch triads described in the Ganzhi pages of this section.

In practice this means that a question about career is never answered from the career palace alone. The career palace is read together with its opposite, the spouse palace, and with the two palaces trine to it, which are the life palace and the wealth palace. A strong star in any of the four contributes; an afflicted one in any of the four is felt. This is why a chart with an empty or unpromising palace for some domain may still be read favourably for it, and why practitioners resist quick judgements based on a single compartment.

It also has a structural consequence worth noticing. Since the life palace, career palace and wealth palace always fall in the same triangle, the system treats selfhood, occupation and money as intrinsically linked — you cannot examine one without the others entering. Likewise marriage, travel and fortune-and-virtue form a triangle, so relationships, movement and inner life are read as one complex. These groupings are built into the geometry and are not conclusions drawn from any particular chart. Whether they reflect something true about lives or merely the way the diagram happens to divide is a fair question, and the tradition does not raise it.

The Body Palace and other reference points

The Life Palace is the principal reference point but not the only one, and a reader meeting a full chart will find several markers whose function is easy to confuse.

The most important is the Body Palace (身宮). It is derived from the same two pieces of data as the Life Palace, the lunar month and the birth hour, but counted in the opposite direction, so it always falls in one of a limited set of positions relative to the Life Palace. Where the Life Palace is usually explained as the given self — disposition, native character and what a person starts with — the Body Palace is explained as the acquired self, what a person becomes through effort and circumstance, and it is often said to matter more in later life. Lineages place different emphasis on this distinction, and some modern teachers use the Body Palace sparingly. Readers should therefore note the framework a source follows and apply it consistently.

Two further markers are the ruler of the Life Palace and the ruler of the Body Palace, each a designated star assigned by rule from the relevant branch. These are understood to indicate an underlying disposition independent of which stars occupy the palaces. They are prominent in older material and treated as secondary in much modern practice, illustrating how lineages preserve different layers of the system. When a chart element seems unfamiliar, it may be one of these older devices retained by some traditions while others give priority to a smaller set of core markers.

Empty palaces and borrowed stars

There are fourteen major stars and twelve palaces, so a chart cannot fill every palace evenly. Some palaces receive two major stars and others receive none at all. A palace with no major star is called an empty palace (空宮), and how to read one is a standard technical problem rather than an unusual case — most charts contain several.

Empty does not mean unimportant or void of content. The usual procedure is to borrow the stars of the opposite palace and read them into the empty one, on the reasoning that opposite palaces are already treated as a pair. A person with an empty marriage palace facing a strong opposite palace is therefore not read as having no marriage prospects; the opposite palace’s stars supply the description. Minor stars, of which there are many, also occupy palaces and contribute, so an empty palace is rarely blank on the page.

There is an interpretive lesson here. Because borrowing is available, palaces with no major stars, with supportive stars or with challenging stars can all be integrated into a complete reading. This flexibility allows the system to address every chart, and it also places responsibility on the reader to state the method clearly. Some lineages understand an empty palace as an area that draws more strongly on external support; others emphasise adaptability and the influence of the opposite palace. These can be approached as different emphases within the same relational structure.

The palaces can be re-centred

There is a further sophistication worth noting. The twelve life-domains do not stay fixed to the person’s own life alone. In a technique sometimes called “borrowing the palaces,” any palace can be taken as a new starting point in order to read the life of a relevant other person — treating the Spouse Palace, say, as the “Life Palace” of the partner and reading the rest of the chart around it. This rotational logic lets a single chart be interrogated from many angles, and it is one of the features that gives experienced practitioners so much to work with. It also, inevitably, adds to the system’s flexibility and therefore to the difficulty of pinning its claims down.

A note of perspective

As always, a note of perspective is in order. The twelve-palace framework is an elegant and genuinely useful way of organising a discussion of a life; its categories map neatly onto the concerns most people actually have. But the framework’s usefulness as a way of structuring reflection should not be confused with evidence that the positions of symbolic stars in these palaces actually determine marriage, wealth, or health. The palaces provide the vocabulary and the map; whether the map corresponds to the territory of a real future is precisely the claim that the tradition asserts and that modern evidence does not support. Described here on its own terms, the system’s structure is worth understanding; its predictive power should be regarded with appropriate caution.

Key points

The twelve palaces are the structural frame of a Zi Wei chart — the stage on which the stars act.

They are anchored to the twelve Earthly Branches, linking the chart to the calendar.

Each palace covers one life-domain, and their names show the system’s scope.

Together they form a checklist of the areas a traditional society treated as central.

Palaces opposite each other are read together, so no palace is interpreted alone.

The twelve domains can be re-centred to read a chart from a different starting point.

The framework is a genuinely useful way of organising a life into topics, whatever one makes of its predictive claims.

Sources drawn on for this article include: Richard J. 3Cp>

Ink
