Its trigrams and hexagrams became deeply woven into Taoist cosmology, ritual, internal cultivation, temple art and the language of time. In Wudang culture they can appear in architecture, vestments, diagrams, martial practice and teachings about change.

This relationship grew over many centuries. The early Zhouyi, later commentaries, Han systems of correspondence and Taoist traditions each contributed something different. Reading them together reveals a history of creative integration: a classic continually receiving new meanings as communities used it to understand the cosmos, the body and the path of cultivation.

A shared classic in Chinese culture

The earliest layers of the Zhouyi predate organised Taoist institutions. They preserve hexagrams, line statements and divinatory judgements connected with the world of the early Zhou. Between the late Zhou and Han periods, commentarial writings known as the Ten Wings developed the text into a broad philosophy of change, symbolism, ethics and cosmic process.

By the Han dynasty the Yijing held a central place among the classics studied by scholars and officials. At the same time, its symbols were available to many intellectual and religious communities. Taoist engagement with the book therefore belongs to a larger Chinese culture of shared texts, images and techniques.

The value of this history is not to draw rigid borders. It shows how traditions can remain distinct while learning from a common source. Taoist readers brought the Yijing into their own visions of the Dao, ritual order, self-cultivation and return.

From divination to a philosophy of change

A hexagram presents a configuration of six broken or unbroken lines. Its judgement and line texts speak through images of travel, family, leadership, difficulty, waiting, advance and return. A traditional reading places a present concern within this field of relationships and asks how the situation may be developing.

The commentarial tradition widened the scope of the figures. Change came to be understood as continuous generation: a world in which patterns arise, reach fullness, transform and renew themselves. Human wisdom involves recognising one’s position within that movement and responding with care.

This orientation resonated strongly with Taoist thought. The Dao De Jing and later Taoist writings also value timing, reversal, receptivity and action that does not rely on needless force. The traditions are not identical, yet they can illuminate one another because both attend closely to process.

Correlative cosmology and the language of time

Han thinkers linked trigrams and hexagrams with seasons, directions, lunar phases, musical tones and calendrical cycles. Such systems are often called correlative cosmology: they organise different fields through patterns of correspondence.

One influential family of diagrams traces the waxing and waning of yin and yang through a sequence of twelve hexagrams. A single yang line returns at the winter solstice, grows through successive stages and later gives way as yin increases. The sequence provides a visual language for rhythm and timing.

Taoist writers developed this language creatively. A seasonal image could describe a phase of ritual or cultivation; a change in line structure could represent the refinement of an inner quality. Calendar, cosmos and body became related levels of one symbolic pattern.

These correspondences work within traditional interpretive frameworks. Different texts and lineages may map them in different ways, so context remains essential.

The Cantong qi and the alchemical tradition

The Cantong qi (Seal of the Unity of the Three) became one of the most influential works linking the Yijing with Chinese alchemy. Its date and authorship have been discussed in different ways, and its compact verses received many layers of commentary. What is clear is the importance it acquired in both external and internal alchemical traditions.

The text brings together language from the Yijing, cosmology and alchemical transformation. Hexagrams, trigrams, lunar phases and seasonal cycles provide a vocabulary for stages, timing and the joining of complementary qualities. Later internal alchemy (neidan) read many of these images within the practitioner’s own body and mind.

In this setting, symbolic language is not casual decoration. It belongs to a technical tradition of teaching and commentary. Terms that seem poetic—fire, water, lead, mercury, dragon, tiger, sun and moon—can refer to related aspects of one cultivation process.

Water and fire as a language of cultivation

The trigrams commonly called Water (Kan) and Fire (Li) are especially important in internal alchemy. Their line structures are complementary: Water has a firm line within yielding lines, while Fire has a yielding line within firm lines.

Taoist texts use this visual structure to speak about qualities hidden within their apparent opposites. Firmness may be held within receptivity; clarity may need a centre of openness. The joining or reordering of Water and Fire becomes a symbol of integration and return.

Interpretations vary across schools, and alchemical passages are traditionally studied through commentary, oral instruction and sustained practice. They are not simply schedules to be followed from a few isolated sentences. Their value lies in the complete framework that gives each symbol its place.

Earlier Heaven and Later Heaven

Two arrangements of the eight trigrams became particularly influential. The Earlier Heaven arrangement presents symmetrical pairs facing their structural opposites. It is often associated with original order, completeness or a pattern before differentiation. The Later Heaven arrangement relates the trigrams to directions, seasons and processes as they unfold in the manifest world.

Taoist cultivation frequently uses the distinction between an original condition and the condition of everyday life. Practice is described as harmonising what has become dispersed and allowing the original endowment to become clear again. The two trigram arrangements offer an elegant visual language for this movement.

They also serve different practical purposes. A symmetrical arrangement may frame cosmological reflection, while a directional arrangement may guide orientation, ritual space or traditional geomantic practice.

Reading temple imagery

Once the vocabulary becomes familiar, many details of a Taoist temple become more legible. Trigrams may be carved into screens, set into paving, arranged around a taijitu, woven into ritual robes or used in diagrams of sacred space. Their placement connects the building, officiant and ceremony with a larger pattern of directions and transformations.

At Wudang, associations with the north and Water have particular resonance through Zhenwu, the Perfected Warrior. His iconography, the mountain’s ritual traditions and the imagery of tortoise and snake participate in a network of cosmological correspondences that grew through centuries of Taoist culture.

These designs are also works of art. Geometry, craft, architecture and ritual meaning support one another, allowing philosophical ideas to be encountered through space and movement as well as through books.

Consultation, reflection and practice

The Yijing has long been consulted through yarrow stalks, coins and other lineage-based methods. The result is interpreted through the received hexagram, changing lines, commentaries and the circumstances of the question. A thoughtful consultation creates a pause in which a person can review a situation from more than one angle.

For Taoist readers, this may support attentiveness rather than a desire to control the future. The figures invite reflection on timing, relationship, excess, restraint and the possible consequences of action. The reading becomes part of cultivating responsiveness.

Divination and metaphysical applications are traditional interpretive practices with their own historical frameworks. Their claims and limits should be stated clearly, and their results should not be presented as scientifically established certainty. They are most responsibly approached as traditions of symbolic reasoning, reflection and lived practice.

A grounded way to study

Readers can begin with four habits:

Learn the structure and natural images of the eight trigrams.

Read the early text and later commentaries as connected historical layers.

Notice when calendrical, astronomical or alchemical language is functioning symbolically.

Identify the school, commentary or lineage behind a particular interpretation.

This prevents a rich tradition from being compressed into a set of universal slogans.
