This subcategory supplies them. It is not about technique — you will not find postures or applications here — but about the ideas that practitioners of taijiquan, baguazhang and xingyiquan take for granted when they talk to each other, and that outsiders usually have to guess at.

There are six pages. Together they answer four questions: what the word “internal” is actually contrasting with, whether the traditional origin story is true, what the inherited physiological vocabulary means, and what connects hitting people to Taoist self-cultivation. Getting clear answers to those four makes everything downstream much easier to follow.

Why concepts before technique

Most introductions to Chinese martial arts start with a style and work outwards. That order has a cost. Each style has its own dialect, and if you learn the vocabulary through one of them you tend to mistake its local usage for the general meaning. Taiji people and xingyi people use the word jin differently. Bagua people mean something specific by “changing” that a taiji practitioner would express another way.

Starting with the shared concepts avoids that. It also lets us be honest about which concepts are genuinely shared and which only appear to be because the same character is used. A surprising number of apparent agreements between styles dissolve on inspection into different ideas wearing the same word.

What “internal” is contrasting with

The internal-external distinction is the organising idea of the whole field, and it is far less stable than it looks. Depending on who is using it, it can mean any of the following: arts that train soft power versus arts that train hard power; arts of Taoist origin versus arts of Buddhist origin; arts that cultivate the breath and the mind versus arts that cultivate muscle and bone; arts native to China versus arts influenced from outside; or simply the small group of styles that a particular twentieth-century association chose to admit to its inner circle.

These are five different claims. They do not pick out the same set of arts, and they are not equally defensible. The page on neijia and waijia works through them one at a time and says which survive scrutiny.

The vocabulary problem

Four terms cause most of the trouble, and it is worth naming them here.

Qi is the worst offender, because it is translated as “energy,” which imports a modern physical meaning the word never had. In the classical sources it covers breath, vapour, atmosphere, temperament and the animating aspect of a living body. When a teacher tells you to sink the qi, they are giving an instruction that has an observable result; whether the explanation attached to it is correct is a separate question from whether the instruction works.

Jin and li are usually rendered as “trained power” and “raw strength.” The distinction practitioners draw is real — organised whole-body force behaves differently from local muscular force — but the traditional framing suggests the two are different substances, which they are not.

Song, usually “relaxation,” is the term most often misunderstood in practice rather than in translation. It does not mean absence of tension; it means absence of unnecessary tension, which requires more control, not less.

A general rule covers all four: the instruction and the explanation are separate things, and they can be evaluated separately. “Sink your weight and let the shoulder drop” is an instruction with a checkable result. “Because this allows the qi to descend” is an explanation, and you can find the first useful without committing to the second. Traditional teaching tends to fuse them, and a good deal of unnecessary argument between practitioners and sceptics comes from treating the pair as a single package that must be accepted or rejected whole.

Two kinds of claim, which need different treatment

Everything said in these arts falls into one of two categories, and confusing them is the single commonest error in the literature.

Mechanical claims are claims about how bodies produce and transmit force: that power organised from the ground is greater than power produced by the arm; that a relaxed limb transmits force better than a braced one; that redirecting an incoming force costs less than opposing it. These are testable, and where they have been tested they largely hold.

Cultivational claims are claims about what the practice does to the practitioner over time: that it settles the mind, that it refines something in the person, that it leads somewhere the practitioner could not have reached by other means. These are not testable in the same way, which does not make them false, but does mean they should not be presented as though they were mechanical facts.

Much confusion comes from a teacher making a cultivational claim in mechanical language, or a sceptic dismissing a cultivational claim because it fails a mechanical test.

How to test a claim

You can apply three questions to almost anything you are told in this field, and they will sort most of it.

First: does this change what I do? A philosophical statement that leaves the training identical is decoration. Every genuinely useful principle in these arts corresponds to a specific correction someone can make to your posture or your timing.

Second: what would show this to be false? If nothing could, the claim is not describing the world. This is the test that most quickly exposes claims about projecting force without contact, which are always accompanied by an explanation for why they fail under observation.

Third: who is the source, and what did they have to gain? Lineage claims in particular were often made in circumstances where a prestigious ancestor was commercially or politically valuable.

A fourth question is worth adding when you are assessing a teacher rather than a claim: can they produce the effect on someone who is not their student? Internal martial arts are unusually vulnerable to a training artefact in which students learn, without being told and often without realising, to respond to their teacher in the expected way. This is not fraud on anyone's part; it is an ordinary consequence of years of cooperative practice. But it means a demonstration on a long-term student shows much less than the same demonstration on a stranger.

The six pages

Internal vs. External takes the central distinction apart and reassembles the part of it that works. Zhang Sanfeng and the Legend of Wudang Boxing traces where the origin story came from and when, and explains why a legend can be historically false and culturally decisive at the same time.

The Three Treasures explains jing, qi and shen, the inherited model of what a person is made of, which underlies both internal alchemy and martial internal work. Song, Rooting and Whole-Body Power is the most practical page in the subcategory and covers the mechanics the arts actually rely on.

Martial Arts as Taoist Cultivation asks the hard question — whether the connection between fighting and self-cultivation is substantial or a later justification — and gives an answer with the reasoning shown. Key Sources lists what is worth reading.

Where these ideas came from

None of this vocabulary was invented by martial artists. Jing, qi and shen come from classical medicine and from internal alchemy, where they had precise technical roles centuries before anyone applied them to boxing. The yin-yang and five-phase correlations come from the general cosmological toolkit that also organised medicine, calendrics and statecraft.

What martial artists did was borrow a prestigious, fully-formed explanatory language and apply it to what they already knew how to do. This is worth holding in mind, because it explains a persistent feature of the literature: the theory often fits the practice loosely, with correlations that are numerically tidy but do not correspond to anything a practitioner does differently. Where the borrowed theory does real work, it is usually because a practitioner found the metaphor genuinely useful, not because the correspondence was derived.

What the foundations do not settle

These pages will not tell you which art to study, and they will not adjudicate between lineages. Those questions depend on what you want and on the individual teacher available to you, far more than on any property of the style.

They also will not give you a verdict on qi. Our position is that the training instructions framed in terms of qi frequently produce results, that the traditional explanation of why is not the only available explanation, and that you can practise seriously while holding that question open. Practitioners who insist you must first believe the model, and sceptics who insist the instructions must therefore be worthless, are both overreaching.

How this connects to the rest of the site

The three treasures reappear in the Wellness section, where the same model underlies qigong and Taoist medicine. Yin-yang and the five phases are treated at length in the Chinese Metaphysics section. energy，而這就把一個現代物理含義塞進了一個從未有過此義的字裡。

Ink
