An interpretation useful in one school does not establish what all Taoist texts or all martial lineages teach. Nor does describing transformation within a traditional model supply a demonstrated physiological mechanism.

Jing: clarify what “foundation” means in the lesson

Jing is commonly rendered “essence.” In a martial lesson, a teacher might use it to discuss a student’s foundation or capacity to sustain practice. That teaching use should not be confused with a measurement of a substance, a diagnosis of reproductive health or a calculation of years remaining in an inherited reserve.

If you are told that training is “using up jing,” ask for the concrete concern. Is the workload too demanding? Has your movement become less controlled? Does the teacher want fewer repetitions or a different exercise? Those questions make the instruction understandable without requiring you to accept an unsupported explanation of ageing or sexual activity.

Qi: translate the instruction, not just the word

“Energy” can mislead if it implies a quantity with a single physical unit. “Breath” may also be too narrow for the particular passage. Keep qi as a term when necessary, and ask how it is being used. A historical discussion of circulation and a teacher’s cue about breathing do not become identical because both use the same character.

Consider “sink the qi.” A useful follow-up is: should I change my breathing, release an unnecessary effort, alter my stance, or simply direct attention differently? The phrase alone does not guarantee a particular change in centre of mass or muscle activity. Ask for an explanation and demonstration rather than trying to force an imagined substance downward.

Shen: discuss attention without judging the person

In a lesson, shen may be used to discuss presence, awareness or the quality of attention. A teacher could ask whether you notice a partner’s movement or understand the purpose of the sequence. These are possible teaching interpretations, not a complete definition of the term across religious texts.

Feedback should remain specific. “You missed the agreed signal” is clearer than “you have no spirit.” Someone’s eyes, expression or quiet manner should not become a diagnosis of illness, emotional weakness or inferior character. Ask which observable task the comment concerns and how the task can be made clearer.

Alchemy and dantian are not a universal grading system

Writings on inner alchemy discuss transformation in a religious setting. For example, volume 3 of the collection attributed to Zhang Sanfeng brings together discussions of essence, qi, spirit and cultivation. Its attributed status and textual setting matter; it is not a modern exercise manual or an authenticated transcript of every Wudang school’s teaching.

If a course uses an alchemical sequence or dantian terminology, ask which tradition and interpretation it follows. Do not turn it automatically into three non-overlapping belts or assume that beginners must postpone attention until they have completed years of physical conditioning. A course needs to explain its actual progression.

Turn three labels into questions you can answer

As an editorial aid—not a traditional diagnostic chart—you can use three headings to clarify feedback:

Foundation: What movement or level of effort is appropriate for this task, and what should be adjusted?

Coordination: What should happen together, and what does the teacher want you to observe about breathing or movement?

Attention: What is the intended action, signal or change you should notice?

These questions are not identities between jing and muscles, qi and breath, or shen and the brain. They are a way to make a conversation more precise. A single exercise may involve all three concerns, and another teacher may prefer different categories.

Ask for one clear correction at a time

Suppose a teacher says that an arm movement lacks connection. Ask them to identify the specific relationship they want you to work on, demonstrate it and describe an appropriate comparison. You might then repeat the already-taught movement within the agreed limits and discuss whether the requested change occurred.

This is an example of how to ask for feedback, not a prescribed drill or a promised training effect. There is no need to invent an energetic sensation to satisfy the instruction. If the explanation remains unclear, it is reasonable to ask for ordinary-language wording, a simpler task or an alternative.

Keep healthcare separate from training vocabulary

Do not use a classroom label such as “weak qi” to explain away a medical problem. NCCIH advises against postponing healthcare because of tai chi and recommends asking about an instructor’s experience. Religious or martial authority is not itself a healthcare qualification.

A course description should say whether it offers martial instruction, religious practice or a separate healthcare service. It should not quietly move from discussing a traditional concept to diagnosing you or promising treatment. You can value the cultural vocabulary while declining claims or activities outside the lesson you agreed to.

Evaluate teaching without demanding one vocabulary

An instructor need not abandon Chinese terminology to be clear. Look instead for explanations that distinguish inherited language from present teaching choices, allow questions and describe what students are actually doing. It should be possible to ask what a phrase means without being told that uncertainty proves a lack of commitment.

Equally, plain anatomical language does not automatically make a teacher’s explanation correct. Ask how the claim is supported and whether it fits the task. The aim is not to award victory to “traditional” or “scientific” wording, but to avoid letting either become a substitute for observation and responsible instruction.

Continue through the martial foundations

Return to Internal Martial Arts Foundations for the wider route.
