Difference does not automatically mean error, and resemblance does not by itself prove a shared historical route.

Standing, stepping and coordinated action

Many Xingyiquan curricula use santi shi (三體式) or related standing work. It can slow the task down enough to notice support, balance, hand position, gaze and unnecessary effort. It is not one universal pose: stance length, front-to-rear weight, torso angle and the place of standing within a lesson vary.

Movement then asks whether that organisation survives a step. Direct advance is a recognisable training theme, but “direct” should not mean rushing forward regardless of distance or response. Practitioners can vary pace, range and resistance while observing whether the feet, torso and hands arrive as a connected action. Persistent or sharp pain is a reason to stop and adjust, not proof that a posture is diagnosing or correcting the body.

Five fists: a compact field of study

In many Shanxi- and Hebei-associated curricula, the five fists are pi 劈, beng 崩, zuan 鑽, pao 炮 and heng 橫. They are commonly paired with the five phases—metal, wood, water, fire and earth. It is a dated witness to Sun’s curriculum, not a rulebook for every branch. The dedicated five-fists page will compare direction, footwork, transitions and teaching uses without declaring one outward version uniquely correct.

Animal methods: qualities, sequences and variation

Animal material is often described as the twelve forms, but lists and numbers vary. A name may cue a route, rhythm, tactical problem or way of coordinating the body; it need not mean theatrical imitation. Even the same animal can carry different actions in different transmissions.

Ask what is observable. Does a drill change direction, level, timing or contact? Does it extend a five-fist pattern, introduce a new step or solve a partner task? These questions are more useful than assigning each animal one eternal “essence.” The dedicated animal page will keep branch examples labelled and compare them without flattening them into one canonical set.

Weapons and the spear question

The spear is important to Xingyiquan history and practice. Lineage narratives associate Ji Jike with spear skill, and practitioners often compare empty-hand alignment, advancing steps and issuing action with weapon work. Those associations deserve close attention.

Technical resemblance, however, is not enough to prove that every fist was mechanically copied from a spear. The history page will distinguish early records, later genealogies and the Yue Fei attribution; the sources page will identify which witness says what. Readers can compare weapon and empty-hand tasks directly while keeping historical inference separate from training analogy.

Partner work, contact and safety

Solo repetition can develop consistency, but martial claims need an external condition. A sensible progression might move from a cooperative target to a moving target, a defined entry, limited counters and then freer work. Each stage should state the range, permitted actions, intensity, protective equipment, success condition and stop signal.

Forward pressure is a variable, not a guarantee. It can be tested against angle changes, obstruction and withdrawal rather than praised in the abstract. Partners should agree on contact and increase only one difficulty at a time. Training is not medical treatment or assured self-defence; teacher competence, environment and the way resistance is introduced matter more than a style label.

How to use this Xingyiquan section

The five pages below have separate jobs. Origins and History examines the Yue Fei tradition, Ji Jike, later records and regional transmissions. The Five Element Fists compares the five names as movement and teaching categories. The Twelve Animal Forms explains list variation and animal imagery. Principles examines intention, coordination, the six harmonies and staged descriptions of power. Sources and Reading Paths identifies editions and shows how to compare manuals, scholarship and lineage testimony.

For the broader method, use Key Sources for the Internal Arts.
