This page describes the practical shape of a session, in a class and alone, and what the experience is generally like rather than what it is supposed to signify.

The short version: it is quieter, slower, and more repetitive than most people expect, and rather less mysterious. Most of the difficulty is boredom and mild physical discomfort, not anything exotic.

The overall shape

A session has a reliable structure across almost all traditions. It opens with settling, moves through preparation, then the main practice, then closing, and ends with a return to ordinary activity. A class typically runs sixty to ninety minutes. Solo practice is usually shorter, and twenty to thirty minutes is a realistic daily target.

The opening and closing are not decorative. The opening establishes the postural and attentional conditions that the main practice depends on, and skipping it makes the main practice much less effective. The closing brings the practitioner back to normal alertness, which matters more than beginners assume.

Settling and standing

Practice usually begins standing, feet about shoulder width, knees slightly unlocked, arms hanging. The first few minutes are spent doing apparently nothing: noticing the contact of the feet, letting the shoulders drop, allowing the breath to find its own rhythm.

This is the part beginners find hardest to take seriously and the part experienced practitioners spend most time on. Standing still is genuinely uncomfortable at first. Minor aches surface, the mind produces a stream of unrelated thoughts, and five minutes feels considerably longer than five minutes.

Teachers may adjust posture physically during this phase. If you find this unwelcome for any reason, say so; a reasonable teacher will use verbal correction instead, and any teacher who does not accept that is telling you something useful about themselves.

Warming and loosening

Most sessions include preparatory movements: rotating the joints from ankles upward, shaking the limbs loosely, patting or tapping along the arms, legs, and back, and gentle spinal twists. The tapping is sometimes presented in energetic terms; its immediately observable effect is increased skin sensation and blood flow.

This phase is often the most physically pleasant part of a session, and it is also where existing injuries announce themselves. Anything that hurts sharply rather than aching mildly should be modified or skipped, and a competent teacher will say so unprompted.

The main practice

The core of the session is either a moving set, a period of standing, or a seated practice, and often a short sequence of two of these.

A moving set such as the eight-section brocade is learned piece by piece over weeks. Early on, most of your attention goes to remembering what comes next, which crowds out everything the practice is supposed to develop. This stage is unavoidable and passes. Once the sequence is automatic, attention becomes available for the quality of the movement, and this is the point at which the practice starts doing what it is for.

Standing practice is simpler to describe and harder to do. You hold a position, commonly with the arms rounded in front of the chest, and remain there. Beginners typically manage two to five minutes before the shoulders burn. Duration builds slowly, and there is no benefit in forcing it.

Seated practice involves sitting upright, hands resting or in a specific position, attention held on the breath or on the lower abdomen. It is the least eventful and, for many people, the most difficult to sustain.

What you are likely to feel

In the first weeks: aching shoulders, tired legs, an itchy sense of restlessness, and frequent surprise at how loudly the mind talks. Some people feel pleasantly calm afterwards. Others feel mildly irritated, particularly the first few times.

After a few weeks, more specific sensations commonly appear. Warmth in the palms is the usual first one. Tingling in the fingers, a sense of heaviness in the arms, occasional involuntary small movements, and a feeling of fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen are all frequently reported.

These are the sensations traditionally described as qi. They are real perceptions, not imagination, and there is no reason to be embarrassed about them. They are also consistent with sustained attention on a body region combined with changes in circulation and muscle tone. Feeling them is a sign that you are practising with reasonable attention. It is not evidence for any particular explanation.

Breathing during the session

Beginners usually want to know when to inhale and when to exhale. Most sets specify this, generally pairing expansion and rising with the inhale and contraction and sinking with the exhale. The pairing is not arbitrary, since raising the arms mechanically assists rib expansion.

The important instruction is what to do when the prescribed pattern does not fit. In the early stages, the movements are usually slower than a beginner's natural breathing rhythm, so following the pattern strictly means either straining the breath or holding it. The correct response is to let the breath do what it needs to and keep the movement slow. The breath and the movement synchronise on their own over weeks as breathing capacity and comfort improve.

Teachers who insist on strict breath-movement coordination from the first lesson are producing tension, and it is worth knowing that this is a real disagreement within the tradition rather than one teacher being idiosyncratic.

The closing

Sessions end with a deliberate gathering and settling, usually with the hands passing over the lower abdomen and resting there, sometimes with slow rubbing of the hands and face. Traditionally this is described as returning qi to the origin.

The functional description is that it marks a transition and restores ordinary alertness. Skipping the close and going straight back to normal activity often leaves people feeling vague or slightly disoriented for a while, which is a good practical argument for doing it regardless of the theory.

In a class, and what to expect from a teacher

Classes are usually quiet, with the teacher demonstrating and giving short corrections. There is generally no music in traditional settings, though some modern classes use it. Talking is minimal.

Good teaching is recognisable. The teacher corrects specific things in specific people rather than issuing general instructions to the room. Explanations are given when asked, in plain terms. Physical limits are accommodated without fuss. Questions are answered rather than deflected.

Warning signs are equally recognisable: claims of healing serious illness, discouragement of medical treatment, pressure toward expensive long-term commitments, explanations that consist of vocabulary rather than content, and any suggestion that doubt is an obstacle to progress. That last one is worth taking seriously, because a practice that requires you to suspend judgement has removed your ability to assess it.

Practising alone

Solo practice is where the results actually come from, since classes are too infrequent to produce adaptation. The requirements are minimal: enough floor space to extend the arms, reasonably level ground, and comfortable clothing that does not restrict the waist.

Regularity matters more than duration. Fifteen minutes most days beats an hour at the weekend, and this is not a moral point but a physiological one. Practising at a consistent time helps, mostly because it removes the daily decision about whether to practise.

Outdoors is traditional and pleasant but not necessary. Avoid practising in strong wind or extreme cold, which is traditional advice with an obvious practical basis, and avoid practising immediately after a large meal.

How long before anything happens

Realistically: some immediate effect on mood and alertness within a session or two. Noticeably easier standing and better postural awareness within about a month of daily practice. Changes in sleep, general steadiness, and flexibility over two to three months. Anything more substantial takes longer than most people are willing to hear.

Progress is not linear. Periods where nothing seems to change are normal and are usually followed by a step forward. The temptation during these periods is to change methods, and it is generally the wrong response.

Key points

A session runs settling, loosening, main practice, and closing, and the opening and closing are functional rather than ceremonial.

Standing still is the hardest part for beginners, and the difficulty is boredom and shoulder fatigue rather than anything exotic.

Learning a moving set occupies all available attention at first; the practice only begins to work once the sequence is automatic.

Warmth, tingling, and heaviness commonly appear with practice, are genuine perceptions, and do not by themselves support any particular explanation.

Good teaching is specific and answerable; warning signs include medical claims, pressure to commit, and treating doubt as an obstacle.

Regular short solo practice produces the results, and fifteen minutes most days outperforms a long weekly session.

","

Ink
