It is a different kind of description altogether, concerned with function, relationship, and process rather than with structure. Reading it as bad anatomy produces confusion in both directions: it makes the tradition look stupid, and it makes its practitioners defensive about claims they were never making.

This page sets out that picture, explains what work it does, and is clear about where it stops corresponding to anything physical.

Why anatomy was not the point

Chinese medicine did have anatomical knowledge. Dissection was performed, organ weights and dimensions were recorded, and the Neijing contains measurements. But anatomy never became the organising principle it became in Europe.

The reason is not squeamishness, though Confucian attitudes to bodily integrity contributed. It is that the questions being asked did not require it. If you want to know why someone is unwell and what to do about it, and your interventions are herbs, needles, diet, and exercise, then knowing what an organ looks like helps far less than knowing what it does and what it is connected to.

The tradition therefore developed an extremely detailed functional map and a comparatively thin structural one. This was a reasonable allocation of effort given the tools available.

The body as landscape

Taoist texts describe the body using geographical language. There are mountains and rivers, palaces and chambers, gates and passes, fields and furnaces. The head contains the Mud Ball Palace; the lower abdomen contains a field to be cultivated; there are three passes along the spine that circulating qi must negotiate.

This is not merely poetic. Landscape language carries the idea of terrain that has to be traversed, of obstacles that occur at particular places, and of regions with distinct characters. It suits a practice in which attention is moved through the body and encounters different conditions in different places.

The correspondence between body and world is also doctrinal. The body is a microcosm containing the same structures as the cosmos, and cultivation works because the same principles operate at both scales. Whether one accepts that, it explains why the geography is described the way it is.

The body as a state

The parallel image is administrative. The Neijing assigns each organ an official position: the heart is the sovereign, the lungs are ministers, the liver is the general, the gallbladder is the upright official who makes decisions, the spleen and stomach are the officials of granaries.

Each has responsibilities, and health consists in each performing its function and the whole remaining coordinated. Illness is a failure of administration: an official not doing its job, or overstepping into another's territory.

This framing produces a medicine that thinks in terms of relationships and balance rather than of lesions. It is why Chinese medicine so often describes illness as one system overwhelming another, or failing to support another, rather than as damage to a part.

The organ systems

The most important thing to understand is that organ names do not designate the anatomical organs. Each name refers to a functional system that includes but is not limited to the physical organ.

The kidney system covers reproduction, growth and development, bone, teeth, hearing, and the deepest constitutional reserves. The liver system covers the smooth flow of qi and emotion, the tendons, and the eyes. The spleen system covers digestion, the transformation of food into usable substance, and the holding of things in place. The heart system covers circulation and also consciousness and mental clarity. The lung system covers respiration, the skin, and defence against external influences.

Translating these as kidney, liver, spleen, heart, and lung was a decision by early translators that has caused enormous confusion. A patient told they have kidney deficiency reasonably assumes something is wrong with their kidneys, and in the biomedical sense usually nothing is.

The channels

The channel system maps pathways along which qi is held to circulate, connecting the organ systems to the surface and to each other. Twelve principal channels are associated with organ systems, and eight extraordinary vessels run through the body with different functions.

Extensive searching has not found anatomical structures corresponding to the channels. They do not follow nerves, blood vessels, or lymphatics, though they cross them. Various proposals have been made about connective tissue planes and interstitial spaces, and none has established itself.

What can be said is that the channel map records something. Points along channels do correspond to locations where pressure produces distinctive sensation, and some correspond to identifiable anatomical features such as nerve bundles or muscle attachments. The map is best understood as an accumulated record of where pressing, needling, or attending produced effects, organised into lines for teachability.

The three fields

Three regions, usually called cinnabar fields, are the principal sites of internal work. The lower field sits in the lower abdomen below the navel, the middle field in the chest, and the upper field in the head between the eyebrows.

The lower field is where most practice concentrates, and it is where attention is held in nearly all foundational methods. Its location is described as being inside rather than at the surface, and texts disagree about the exact position, which is itself informative about the kind of thing being described.

Practitioners report a genuine and consistent sensation of warmth or fullness in this region after sustained practice. That perception is real. The interpretation of it as an energy centre being filled is a framework laid over the perception, not a description of it.

The body deities

Some Taoist traditions populate the body with resident spirits. The Shangqing tradition in particular developed elaborate systems in which deities occupying the organs are visualised, named, and addressed, and their departure from the body causes illness and eventually death.

This material is often quietly dropped from modern presentations because it is embarrassing to a tradition wanting to be taken as proto-scientific. That omission distorts the record. The body deities were central to major strands of Taoist practice for centuries.

Read functionally, visualising a specific presence in a specific organ is a technique for directing sustained attention to a body region, which is what the practice actually involves whatever the practitioner believes about it.

The Neijing Tu and the body as a chart

The clearest surviving expression of the landscape image is a chart usually called the diagram of internal pathways, preserved as a stone engraving at the White Cloud Temple in Beijing and dating in its present form from the nineteenth century.

It shows a human torso in profile rendered as a mountain scene. The spine is a mountain range with a waterway running up it. Figures work at various points: a boy and girl operate a treadmill at the base, an old man sits in the upper region, a herdsman ploughs a field. Buildings, terraces, and a pagoda represent structures in the throat and head.

Every element corresponds to something in internal alchemical practice, and the chart functions as a mnemonic for a practitioner who already knows the system rather than as an explanation for someone who does not. This is characteristic of the literature generally: the material was produced for people receiving oral instruction, and it assumes that instruction rather than supplying it.

The chart is worth looking at because it makes the point about this whole framework more directly than any argument can. Nobody engraving that image believed they were producing a picture of what is inside a person. It is a description of a process, using landscape because a landscape is something you move through.

Where this picture stops corresponding

It is worth being explicit. The channels are not physical structures and have not been found. The three fields are not organs or centres. Qi is not a measurable substance or energy in the physical sense, and attempts to identify it with heat, electricity, or bioelectromagnetic fields have not succeeded. The body deities are not present.

None of this makes the framework useless. A map that does not correspond to the terrain in the way a survey does may still get you around, if it was built by people who walked the ground and recorded what they found. But a map of that kind should not be presented as a survey, and the tradition's modern promoters sometimes do exactly that.

Why the picture still repays study

It is the framework the practices were built inside, so understanding it explains why instructions are phrased as they are. It records a long accumulation of observation about how bodies feel from the inside, which is a genuinely under-documented subject. And it insists on an integration of mental and physical states that Western medicine spent centuries denying and has more recently rediscovered.

Taken as a phenomenology of the body rather than as an anatomy of it, the Taoist picture is considerably more defensible and considerably more interesting.

Key points

The Taoist body is a functional and relational description, not a failed anatomical one, and reading it as anatomy confuses both sides.

Landscape and administrative imagery encode ideas about terrain, obstruction, coordination, and overreach.

Organ names designate functional systems far wider than the physical organs, and the translation choice has caused lasting confusion.

Channels have no corresponding anatomical structure, and are best read as an accumulated record of where intervention produced effects.

Sensations in the lower field are real perceptions; the energy-centre interpretation is a framework laid over them.

Body deities were central to major Taoist strands and are quietly omitted from modern presentations that want the tradition to look proto-scientific.

Practical Questions About the Body Map

Are meridians physical structures?

Research has not established the meridians as a separate anatomical network. That does not by itself decide whether a particular treatment has an effect: acupuncture, acupressure and related methods should be assessed intervention by intervention, for a named condition, with benefits and risks measured separately from the traditional explanation.

Is the dantian an organ?

No. Dantian is a practice term for a region of attention and cultivation, not an organ that can be located by a scan or dissection. Different texts and lineages place it somewhat differently. A practitioner may genuinely notice warmth, pressure or steadiness in the lower abdomen without that sensation proving the existence of a hidden anatomical centre.

Do traditional organ names mean the same thing as biomedical organs?

Usually not. A traditional “liver,” “heart” or “kidney” pattern gathers functions and observations that extend far beyond the physical organ. It should not be read as a laboratory or imaging diagnosis. kidney、liver、spleen、heart、lung，是早期譯者的一個決定，它造成了極大的混亂。

<a
