They contain no times, fares, prices or journey durations, because those change and a stale figure is worse than none. What they do give is the order in which the sites make sense, which choices genuinely trade off against each other, and what you lose by leaving something out. That part survives your plan changing, which it will.

How to use these

One principle underlies all of them: the mountain is a road with buildings on it rather than a site with a road through it. The ascent runs from the foot to the summit in a sequence that is meaningful, and following the line gets more out of the place than treating the sites as an unordered list of attractions.

The sequence is also a biography of Zhenwu, which is why it works. Near-abandonment at the Needle-Grinding Well, princely origins at the Prince's Slope, long cultivation at Zixiao, ascent at Nanyan, and enthronement at the summit. You do not need to care about the god for this to be useful; it is simply why the buildings are where they are.

Three decisions govern every version below, and taking them in this order saves a great deal of wasted planning. How many days. Whether you stay on the mountain or in the town at its foot. And whether you are prioritising the summit or breadth. Everything else follows.

Of those, staying on the mountain is the highest-leverage choice available to a visitor, because it converts the two best hours of the day, early morning and late afternoon, from travel time into visiting time.

Half a day

Half a day is a compromise and worth treating as one. You have time for one thing done properly or three things done badly.

The recommendation is to choose depth over coverage: go to one major complex, arrive as early as you can, and stay there. Zixiao is the strongest single choice, because it is the largest surviving working complex, it is genuinely in use, and it rewards standing still in a way that a summit visit under time pressure does not.

The alternative, if the summit matters to you more than anything else, is to commit the whole half day to reaching it and accept that you will see almost nothing else. This is a legitimate choice and many people make it. It is also the version most likely to feel like a queue.

What half a day cannot do is both. Attempting the summit and a complex in the same half day produces a rushed version of each, and the rush is the thing that spoils this site, because everything here rewards being unhurried.

One full day

A full day is enough to do the mountain justice in outline, and the structure is straightforward.

Start early, before the coach groups. The single largest improvement available to a visitor is arriving at a hall in the first hours of the day, when it is quiet, the light is better, and the day's first service may be under way.

Take the sites in ascending order rather than by convenience. The Needle-Grinding Well and the Prince's Slope near the bottom are short visits and set up everything above them. Zixiao in the middle deserves the largest share of your day. Nanyan, the cliff palace, is the most dramatic single place on the mountain and needs less time than Zixiao but should not be hurried.

Then decide about the summit, honestly, in the afternoon rather than in advance. If you have the energy and the light, go. If you do not, stopping at Nanyan and descending in good order is a better day than a forced summit and a rushed descent in fading light. The descent is the underestimated half of this mountain and the part where accidents happen.

What a single day cannot include is the outlying sites. Yuxu at the foot and Wulong away from the main line both need time you do not have, and attempting them turns a good day into a bad one.

Two days

Two days is the point at which the visit stops being a compression and starts being adequate, and the reason is that it lets you sleep on the mountain.

Use the first day for the ascent as far as Nanyan, unhurried, with the largest share at Zixiao. Stay on the mountain overnight rather than descending.

Use the second morning for the summit, starting as early as you are allowed to. This is the single best-value hour on the mountain: the summit early, before the day's crowds arrive, is a different place from the summit at midday, and the difference is not marginal.

Then descend with the afternoon free, which allows either the outlying complexes or a second, slower look at something you rushed the day before. Returning to a hall you have already seen is more rewarding than it sounds, because the second visit is the one where you notice things.

Two days also builds in weather tolerance. Cloud sits on this mountain frequently, and a summit visit lost to cloud on day one can be recovered on day two. A single-day visit has no such margin.

Three to four days

At this length you can stop optimising and start looking, and the additions are qualitative rather than a longer list.

Add Yuxu Palace at the foot, which most visitors skip and which explains more about how this mountain worked than anything above it. It is the largest complex of all despite being lowest, because an institution's administrative office must be larger than its innermost hall. Understanding that inverts the whole hierarchy you have just climbed.

Add Wulong Palace, away from the main line. It is the oldest foundation, it was built to be difficult to reach, and it is the clearest surviving statement of retreat as opposed to institution. Reaching it takes effort and the reward is the contrast: Wulong was built to be hard to get to, Yuxu was built to receive crowds, and they are a valley apart.

Add Yuzhen, associated with Zhang Sanfeng, which is interesting partly for what it is and partly for what it demonstrates: a palace commemorating a meeting that never happened, burnt in 2003, and raised bodily some fifteen metres in the early 2010s to escape a reservoir. Few buildings say as much about heritage and reconstruction in one place.

And add a second visit to whichever complex you liked most. This is the least glamorous recommendation on the page and the one experienced visitors most often make.

A week or more

Beyond four days the visit changes character, and the useful advice changes with it.

Stop planning by site. Once the main line and the outlying complexes are done, further value comes from repetition and from time of day rather than from new locations. The same hall in early morning, in rain, at dusk and in cloud is four different experiences, and nobody who visits once notices this.

Use the weather rather than fighting it. Cloud, which ruins a view, transforms a courtyard. Rain empties the site. Cold empties it further. Visitors with time can afford to go out in conditions that a one-day visitor has to hope against.

Walk the sections between sites rather than skipping them. The connective route is where the relationship between architecture and terrain is legible, and it is the part that explains why the buildings are shaped as they are.

And consider the town at the foot as part of the visit rather than a base for it. A week is long enough that the ordinary life around the mountain becomes interesting in its own right.

If your energy or mobility is limited

This deserves stating separately and honestly, because the standard itineraries assume a great many steps.

The level sites near the foot genuinely are accessible, and Yuxu in particular is largely flat, very large, and among the most interesting places on the mountain. A visit confined to the foot is not a consolation prize.

The summit and the cliff cannot be made accessible without destroying what is visited. That is a plain statement rather than an apology: the difficulty of arrival is part of what these places mean, and removing it would remove the thing.

Mechanised transport reduces the climbing considerably but does not eliminate steps, and the remaining sections include long flights. Ask on site what the current arrangements are, since they change, and plan the descent rather than the ascent, because descent is the harder half on tired legs.

Knowing when to stop is the judgement that matters here, and stopping at Nanyan, or at Zixiao, or at the foot, produces a good day rather than a failed one. Health questions belong with your own doctor rather than with a website or a ticket office.

What to leave out, and what never to leave out

Since every itinerary is a set of omissions, it is worth being explicit about which ones cost least.

Leave out the summit before you leave out Zixiao. The summit is the destination and Zixiao is the substance, and a visitor who saw only the summit has seen the least representative thing on the mountain.

Leave out breadth before you leave out early mornings. Two sites seen quietly beat five seen in a crowd, and no addition to your itinerary compensates for arriving at eleven.

Leave out the cableway sections before you leave out the walk between complexes, if you have a choice, since the connective route carries most of the explanation.

Never leave out standing still. The single commonest mistake at Wudang is walking through it. Every itinerary above works better with fewer places and more time in each, and if you take one thing from this page, take that.

Sources and limits: these itineraries deliberately contain no times, prices, fares, opening hours or transport details, because all of them change and stale figures mislead.
