It assumes you have already decided roughly how long you are staying and what you want to study, because without those two things fixed no evaluation is possible. What follows is a procedure: what to do first, what to ask, whom to ask, what to watch, and what to insist on in writing.

Go short first

If there is one piece of advice on this page worth following above the others, it is this. Commit to the shortest arrangement a school will accept, then extend if it is working.

The reasoning is simple. Before you arrive you cannot judge a school, and in the first week you still cannot, because everything is unfamiliar and every teacher looks impressive to someone who cannot yet see what they are looking at. By the end of a fortnight you can judge quite well. A short initial commitment buys you the right to use that judgement, and it costs you almost nothing, because extending is easy and every school is glad to take more money from a student already in residence.

Discounts for long prepayment are the main pressure against this, and they are worth resisting. A modest saving is a poor trade for losing the ability to leave. Consider also what a heavy prepayment discount implies about a school's priorities: it is buying certainty about your money before you have certainty about its teaching.

The same logic applies to arriving without a booking at all, which is a reasonable option for anyone flexible. Spending three days in the town, watching classes and talking to students, will teach you more than three months of research from home. It is not the low-risk choice it might appear, since it depends on availability, but it is worth knowing that people do it and that it often works well.

Questions to ask before paying

Ask these in writing, by message or email, so that you have the answers and so that you can see how a school handles a specific enquiry.

On teaching: who will teach my classes day to day, and what is their background? How many students are in a beginners' class? Are beginners taught separately from continuing students? What will I actually be studying in the first month, and in the third? How many hours a day, and how is the day divided?

On the school: how many students are here now, and how many are staying more than three months? What is the longest a current student has been here? May I watch a class before deciding? May I speak to a current student?

On practicalities: what exactly is included in what I pay, and what is extra? What happens if I leave early, and what happens if I extend? Who handles registration with the local authorities? What do you need from me for visa purposes, and what will you provide? Is there anywhere on site to do laundry, and what is the food situation for someone who cannot eat a particular thing?

On limits: what do you not teach? This is the most revealing question on the list. A confident school answers it easily, because knowing your own scope is a sign of competence. A school that claims to teach everything has told you it has thought about none of it seriously.

What a good answer sounds like

The content of the answers matters less than their texture, and the difference is easy to hear once you know what to listen for.

A good answer is specific and bounded. Morning class is taught by a named person, there are usually eight to twelve beginners, you will spend the first three weeks on basics and the opening section of a short form, and no, we do not teach sparring. Numbers, names, limits.

A poor answer is warm and unbounded. Our master has decades of experience, students progress at their own pace, the curriculum is adapted to each individual, you will learn the true internal art. Nothing in that is refusable and nothing in it is checkable, which is the point of phrasing it that way.

A third pattern is worth naming: the answer that redirects. You ask how many students are in the class and are told about the beauty of the mountain, or you ask who teaches and are told about the lineage. Redirection is not always evasion, and language barriers produce a lot of accidental non-answers, so ask again more simply. If the second attempt also produces atmosphere instead of information, that is a result.

Talk to students, not testimonials

Current and recent students are the best information available to you, and the mechanics of reaching them matter.

Ask the school to put you in touch with a current student, and note whether it does. A school with nothing to hide arranges it easily. A school that refuses, or supplies only a designated enthusiast, has answered a different question than the one you asked.

Better still, find students independently. Former students write about their stays in places the school does not control, and people who trained somewhere a year ago have no stake in your decision. Ask them what they wish they had known, which is a far more productive question than whether they recommend it. Ask what the third month was like. Ask what the worst part was, and be suspicious of anyone who says there wasn't one.

When you talk to students in person, do it away from the school and away from staff. This is not paranoia; people are polite in front of their teachers, and the useful conversation happens over a meal in town.

One caution about student opinion. Students who have invested months in a school are motivated to believe it was the right choice, and their enthusiasm should be weighted accordingly. What they say about facts is more reliable than what they say about quality: how many hours, who taught, how big the class, what happened when someone got injured.

Visit if you possibly can, and what to watch

Watching a single class tells you more than a month of correspondence. If you are in the town, ask. Most schools allow it, and a refusal is itself informative.

Watch the teacher's attention. Are they looking at students, or performing? Do they correct individuals by name and by touch, or call out general instructions to the group? Does anyone struggling receive help, or are they left to flounder at the back?

Watch the students rather than the teacher. Are they engaged or enduring? Do the more advanced ones move differently from the beginners, in a way you can see even without expertise? A school where everyone moves about the same after a year is not teaching much.

Watch the ordinary logistics. Does the class start when it was supposed to? Is the training space maintained? Do students seem to know what they are doing next? Chaos in these matters is not a small thing; it consumes training time every day.

Watch what happens at the end. Do students linger and practise, or leave immediately? Voluntary extra practice is one of the more reliable signs that people believe they are getting something.

Season, and why it changes the answer

When you come alters the experience enough that it belongs in the evaluation rather than in the packing list.

Winter at Wudang is cold, damp and quiet. Training outdoors in it is genuinely hard, heating is often limited, and some students find it miserable. It is also when schools are least crowded, when classes are smallest, and when the teacher who is unreachable in summer has time. Long-term students frequently regard winter as the best period for exactly this reason, and short-stay students frequently regret booking it.

Summer is hot and humid, and the mountain is busy. Schools have more students, which means bigger classes and more attention going to newcomers, and the town is fuller. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable and correspondingly the most popular.

The practical point is to ask a school how many students it has in the month you are considering, not in general. The same school in February and in August is close to two different institutions.

If you cannot visit first

Many people book from abroad with no realistic chance of inspecting anything, and there is a sensible way to do it.

Book short, book somewhere organised enough to handle a foreign arrival competently, and treat the first stay as reconnaissance rather than the whole plan. Accept that a well-administered school with slightly generic teaching is a better first choice than a possibly excellent teacher you cannot reach, because arriving successfully is the precondition for everything else.

Then use the stay to look around. Once you are in the town you can watch other schools, meet other teachers, and discover things that no amount of remote research would have surfaced. Many long-term students at Wudang are not at the school they first booked, and that is a normal and healthy pattern rather than a sign that they chose badly.

For parents enrolling a child

This is a different decision with different criteria, and teaching quality is not the first of them.

The questions that matter are about supervision and care. Who is responsible for a child outside training hours, and what does that mean in practice? What is the ratio of adults to young students? What are the sleeping arrangements, and who else is in the room? What is the procedure if a child is injured or ill, and where is the nearest medical facility? What is the policy on contact with home, and how often? Has the school had young foreign students before, and can you speak to a parent of one?

Be direct about safeguarding. Ask what checks exist on staff and senior students who supervise children, and how a complaint would be handled. A school that finds these questions reasonable is the kind you want. A school that finds them offensive has answered you.

Consider language and isolation seriously. A young person without Chinese, far from home, in a demanding physical routine, needs more support than an adult, and the schools best set up for adult foreign students are not automatically set up for this. Short first applies here with double force.

Getting it in writing

Whatever you agree, have it written down in a message you keep.
