This page is not about them. It describes the patterns that indicate a school is either poorly run or actively taking advantage, and it separates the two, because the responses are different. It also names some things that look alarming and are not, since misreading normal Chinese teaching practice as abuse is a common error among foreign students.

Claims that should stop you

Certain claims are reliable indicators, not because a person making them is necessarily dishonest, but because each one requires a belief that is either untestable or has been tested and failed.

Power without contact. That a teacher can move you, affect your balance, or transmit force through the air. This is the cleanest available test of a school's honesty, because the claim is specific, checkable, and has never survived controlled examination. A school that demonstrates it on compliant students and discourages you from testing it has told you what kind of place it is.

Cure of disease. That a set of exercises treats a named condition, replaces medication, or removes the need for a diagnosis. The danger is not the exercises; it is the delay in getting real treatment. This claim also frequently escalates: a teacher who begins by curing back pain sometimes ends by advising a student to stop taking prescribed medicine, which is the point at which a bad school becomes a dangerous one.

Unbroken secret lineage. That the school holds material transmitted intact from a named figure centuries ago, unavailable elsewhere, and revealed progressively to committed students. Every element of that sentence is a sales structure. Secret material is not advertised, and progressive revelation contingent on payment is a pricing model.

Speed. That weeks will produce what is normally described as taking years. Internal training is slow, and this is the one thing nobody in the field disputes.

Uniqueness. That this is the only real school, that other teachers on the mountain are frauds, that the association or the government has suppressed the true art. Systematic denigration of every alternative is a control tactic before it is a claim.

The diagnosis-and-remedy pattern

One pattern deserves separate treatment because it is effective, it feels like care, and it is how a large share of exploitation actually works.

It runs like this. Someone with apparent authority identifies a problem in you that you did not know you had: a blockage, an imbalance, a weakness, a spiritual obstruction, damage from previous training. The diagnosis is unfalsifiable and usually flattering in its way, since it explains your difficulties as something done to you rather than something you have not yet learned. Then a remedy is offered, and the remedy costs money, or requires a longer commitment, or requires private sessions.

The reason to be alert to this is that it is indistinguishable from good teaching in form. A good teacher also identifies problems you did not know you had. The difference is in three places. A good teacher's diagnosis is about something observable: your knee tracks inward, your shoulder lifts, you hold your breath at the transition. A good teacher's remedy is practice, usually more of what you are already doing. And a good teacher's diagnosis does not come with an invoice.

If a diagnosis you cannot check leads to a remedy you must buy, that is the pattern, regardless of how kindly it is delivered.

Behavioural warning signs

These concern how a school operates rather than what it claims, and they are more reliable because they are harder to conceal.

Isolation. Discouraging contact with other schools, other teachers, or students who have left. Suggesting that outsiders will not understand. Reacting badly when you spend time in town. A confident school does not mind you looking around, because it expects to compare well.

Hostility to questions. Treating a practical enquiry as disrespect, or turning a reasonable question into a criticism of the student's attitude. This is distinct from a teacher who is simply brusque; the sign is not roughness but the specific move of making questions themselves the problem.

Absent authority. The named master appears rarely, teaching is delegated to students, and access to the person you came for is described as something to be earned later. Delegation is normal and often fine. Delegation combined with a marketing operation built entirely around one unavailable person is not.

Escalating commitment. Every stage requires a little more: a longer stay, a higher level, a private arrangement, a title. Where the sequence has no visible end, it is a structure rather than a curriculum.

Loyalty tests. Being asked to demonstrate commitment in ways unrelated to training, to cut contact with other students, or to accept that leaving would be a betrayal. Any framing in which departure is disloyalty rather than a decision is a serious sign.

No accountability for injury. Watch what happens when someone is hurt. A decent school stops, adjusts and helps. A bad one treats injury as weakness and the injured student as an inconvenience.

How pressure is usually applied

Pressure at these schools is rarely aggressive, which is what makes it effective. It is worth recognising the ordinary forms.

Scarcity: places are limited, the teacher is about to travel, the discount ends this week. Deadlines that appear during a negotiation are almost always constructed.

Sunk cost: you have already come so far, you have already paid for a month, leaving now wastes it. The money already spent is gone either way and is not a reason to spend more.

Identity: real students stay, serious practitioners commit, those who leave were not ready. This converts a commercial decision into a statement about your character, which is exactly why it works.

Kindness: genuine hospitality, meals, small favours, personal attention, followed by a request. Most of the time the kindness is simply kindness. Occasionally it is groundwork, and the way to tell is whether saying no changes how you are treated.

Money handling

Financial arrangements at small schools are informal, which is not in itself suspicious. What matters is whether the informality is consistent and documented.

Reasonable signs: a stated total, a clear list of what is included, a written record of what you paid, and a consistent answer about extras. Payment in advance for a block of time is normal practice here and not a warning sign by itself.

Warning signs: amounts that change after you arrive, extras that appear steadily and were never mentioned, refusal to put figures in writing, pressure to pay for much longer than you asked, cash-only insistence combined with no receipt, and requests to pay individuals rather than the school. Any pressure to pay for additional levels, titles or certificates on top of the agreed fee should be treated as a straightforward warning.

A practical protection: pay for the shortest period you can, keep your own written record of every payment, and never put yourself in a position where you cannot afford to leave. The ability to walk away is the only real leverage a student has, and preserving it is worth more than any discount.

Things that look alarming and are not

Foreign students regularly misread normal practice, and it is worth listing the common false alarms so that real signs stand out.

Harsh correction and shouting. Chinese teaching in physical disciplines is often loud, blunt and public, and being corrected sharply in front of others is not humiliation in this context. Judge by whether the correction is about your movement or about you.

Repetition without explanation. Being told to do the same thing many times and not being told why is standard method, not withholding. Explanation often arrives after the ability does.

Physical discomfort. Aching legs, exhaustion in the first weeks, being made to hold a stance longer than you want. This is the training. The line is joint pain and injury, not discomfort.

Hierarchy and formality. Deference to senior students, set forms of address, rules about behaviour in the training hall. This is ordinary structure. It becomes a problem only when it is used to make questions impossible.

Basic conditions. Simple rooms, plain food, cold in winter. Modest facilities are a fact about the place and its cost, not evidence of bad faith.

If it goes wrong

Suppose you have arrived, paid, and concluded that the school is wrong for you. What follows is practical rather than legalistic, because the legalistic route is largely unavailable to a short-term visitor.

First, separate the two possible problems. If the teaching is mediocre or mismatched, that is disappointing and not urgent. Finish the period you have paid for if you are getting anything from it, look at other schools while you are there, and move afterwards. Students changing schools is common and carries no stigma.

If you feel manipulated or unsafe, treat it differently. Leave. Do not negotiate, do not seek a refund first, and do not wait for a convenient moment. Money already paid is a smaller loss than a further month, and a school willing to pressure you is not going to be reasoned into releasing funds.

Practical steps: keep your passport in your own possession at all times, and be aware that no school has any right to hold it. Keep your own records and photographs of payments. Tell somebody at home your plans and where you are. Know where the nearest larger town is and how to reach it independently.

If the situation is serious, involving threats, physical harm, or an inability to leave, contact your own country's embassy or consulate in China, and contact local police. Consular staff exist for exactly this and can advise on local procedure in a way a website cannot. Do not let embarrassment delay this; the number of students who report being reluctant to make a fuss is one reason bad situations continue.

Finally, if you have a bad experience, describe it publicly and factually afterwards. The single biggest weakness in this market is that students who had good experiences write about them and students who did not usually stay quiet. A plain, unemotional account of what happened is the most useful thing you can leave for the next person.

Sources and limits: this page describes patterns reported consistently by students over many years.
