It contains no figures. Prices, fees and official requirements change, sometimes at short notice, and a stale number is worse than no number because people trust it. What follows is structure, which lasts.

How schools price

Almost all schools price by block of time rather than by lesson, and almost all bundle training with accommodation and food into a single figure. This is the standard arrangement and it is worth understanding its consequences.

Because the bundle is single, comparing two schools is harder than it looks. One quote may include a private room, three meals and a uniform; another may include a shared room, two meals and nothing else. The apparently cheaper school can easily be the more expensive one. Ask each school to break its figure into training, accommodation and food, and compare the parts.

Longer blocks are almost always priced lower per unit of time, which creates the pressure toward long prepayment discussed elsewhere on this site. The discount is real. It is also the mechanism by which you lose the ability to leave, so treat it as a trade rather than a saving.

Beyond the bundle, ask specifically about what sits outside it. Common extras include uniforms and training equipment, weapons, private lessons, certificates, examination or grading fees, laundry, and any transport the school arranges. None of these is unreasonable. The problem arises when they are not mentioned until after you arrive, which is why the question to ask before paying is not what does it cost but what is not included.

Your other costs

The school fee is not your total, and the other categories are predictable enough to plan for even without figures.

Getting there and back, which for most people is the single largest item and is entirely outside the school's arrangements. Travel within China to reach the area, and the local leg from the nearest transport hub.

Permission to stay: application costs, any service charges, and possibly travel to a consulate. For longer stays there may be additional in-country formalities.

Insurance for the whole period, which is not optional in any sensible reading and is discussed below.

Everyday spending: food outside the canteen, which most students do more of than they expect, coffee, snacks, phone and data, toiletries, laundry if not included, and warm clothing if you underestimated winter.

Discretionary items: entrance to the mountain and its sites on days off, trips away, and equipment you decide you want once you are training.

A reserve. This is the item people omit and the one that matters most. Hold enough in reserve to leave at short notice and get home without asking anyone's permission. A student who cannot afford to leave is in a weak position regardless of how good the school is, and the reserve is what keeps the decision yours.

Paying, and why it is awkward

Payment mechanics in China are the practical difficulty foreign students most consistently underestimate.

Everyday transactions in China run overwhelmingly through domestic mobile payment applications. Foreign cards are integrated into these to a degree that changes over time and works better in cities than in small towns. Cash remains usable but is increasingly awkward for small purchases. The result is that a stay of any length is much easier if you resolve payment before you need it, and much harder if you arrive assuming your usual card will work everywhere.

For the school fee itself, arrangements vary: international transfer, payment on arrival, or a deposit followed by a balance. Ask which, ask what evidence of payment you will receive, and keep your own record of every transaction including photographs of receipts. Informality is normal in small schools; undocumented informality is not something you should accept.

Two things to be careful about. Be cautious of any pressure to pay to an individual rather than to the school, and of amounts that change after you have arrived. Neither is proof of bad faith on its own, but both belong in the category of things to clarify immediately rather than let pass.

What to get in writing

Before you send anything, get one message that states the whole arrangement. This is less about enforceability, which is unrealistic for a short-term visitor, than about clarity and about what the request itself reveals.

The message should confirm: the dates, the total amount, what the total includes, what is charged separately, the terms if you leave early, the terms if you extend, what documentation the school will provide for your permission to stay, and who handles registration with local authorities.

Keep it. Keep it somewhere you can find it from your phone. And note the school's behaviour when you ask: a business that confirms all of it in one clear message is showing you how it operates, and one that responds with reassurance instead of confirmation is showing you the same thing.

Permission to stay

Requirements for entering and remaining in China vary by nationality, change over time, and differ substantially between short and long stays. Everything here is structural, and the actual rules must come from the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your country.

The important structural point is that a short visit and a stay of months are different in kind rather than in degree. A short stay is usually a straightforward application made from home. A longer stay is an administrative project: it may require documentation issued by the school, it has lead times measured in weeks, and it may involve steps to be completed after arrival. Start it early. Ask the school precisely which documents it will issue, in whose name, and how long it typically takes to produce them.

Be cautious of any school that treats this casually or suggests working around the intended purpose of a permission. The consequences of getting it wrong fall on you, not on them, and they can include being unable to remain. If a school's advice differs from an official source, follow the official source.

Plan for the possibility of extending. Many students end up staying longer than they intended, and whether that is possible depends on decisions made before you left home. Ask about it in advance even if you are sure you will not want to.

Registration and local formalities

Registering your place of residence with local authorities is an ordinary legal requirement in China, applying generally rather than being aimed at foreign students. Hotels do it automatically; a school should do it for you.

Ask who handles it and confirm that it has been done. A competent school treats this as routine. A school that seems unaware of the obligation is telling you something about its administrative standard, which is the same standard that will handle your other paperwork.

Keep your passport in your own possession. There is no reason for a school to hold it beyond briefly taking details, and no school has any right to retain it. Carry or keep accessible a copy separately from the original, and keep a photograph of it somewhere you can reach without your phone.

Insurance

Treat insurance as a requirement rather than an option. You are undertaking daily strenuous physical training in a mountainous area at some distance from major hospitals, and the ordinary rate of minor injury is high.

Check three things specifically. First, that martial arts training is covered rather than excluded, since policies commonly exclude contact sports or hazardous activities and the wording matters. Second, that the cover extends to the whole length of your stay, including any extension. Third, that it includes medical evacuation or repatriation, which is the provision that actually matters if something serious happens in a place where the nearest capable facility may be some hours away.

Also check how the policy pays. Some reimburse you afterwards, which means you need funds available at the time. Others arrange payment directly, which is considerably more useful in practice. Read the exclusions rather than the summary, and if the wording about your activity is ambiguous, ask the insurer in writing and keep the answer.

Health and medical care

Basic medical care is available locally, and more capable hospitals are in the larger towns and cities of the region rather than at the mountain. This distance is the reason evacuation cover matters.

Bring an adequate supply of any medication you take regularly, in original packaging, with a copy of the prescription. Do not assume a specific medication will be obtainable locally, and check before travelling whether anything you take is restricted in China, since some medicines that are ordinary elsewhere are controlled. Your own doctor or the relevant embassy is the source for that.

Discuss the trip with your own doctor before booking if you have any condition affected by heavy daily exercise, particularly involving the heart, joints, back or blood pressure, or if you are pregnant or managing a chronic illness. A school is not equipped to manage a medical condition and should not be asked to.

On site, the sensible rules are the same everywhere. Report injuries rather than concealing them. Treat joint pain as a signal rather than something to endure. See a doctor for anything that does not resolve, or that involves swelling, a joint giving way, numbness, or pain that wakes you. Nothing on this site is medical advice, and a teacher's opinion about an injury is not a diagnosis, however experienced they are.

Practical items worth bringing

Most things can be bought locally, so this list is confined to what is genuinely awkward to obtain or worth having from the first day.

Footwear that fits, in a form suitable for training, since larger foreign sizes are difficult to find locally. More than one pair, because they get wet.

Warm layers if you are coming in the cold months, including something for indoors. Underestimating damp cold is the most common packing mistake here.

Clothing that dries quickly, and enough training kit that a slow laundry cycle does not become a problem.

Medication as above, plus a small personal supply of the ordinary things: painkillers you know suit you, blister and wound dressings, and any support or strapping you habitually use.

Copies of documents, held separately from the originals, and a written note of your insurance details, policy number and emergency line that does not depend on your phone working.

A means of paying that does not rely on a single card or a single application, and enough of a reserve to leave.

Sources and limits: this page deliberately contains no prices, fees or official requirements, because all of them change and stale figures are trusted more than they deserve.
