This page sorts the common mistakes by how much they actually matter, which is the useful way to organise them, and explains what to do afterwards. The short answer is that almost nothing you can do as a visitor causes lasting offence, and the recovery is always smaller than you think.

Harmless and very common

These happen constantly, nobody minds, and they are listed only so that you can stop worrying about them.

Walking in the wrong door, or using the central doorway instead of a side one. The convention exists, and using the wrong door is not a transgression.

Treading on the raised threshold instead of stepping over it. A minor convention, widely observed, and widely not.

Not knowing what you are looking at. Most visitors, including most Chinese visitors, could not name the figures in a hall or explain what a service is doing. Ignorance is the normal condition and requires no apology.

Not bowing, not lighting incense, not making an offering. These are optional and nobody notices their absence.

Making a gesture slightly wrong. This reads as an outsider being polite, which is exactly what you are.

Not knowing the word for anything, including how to address a priest. None of them is serious.

Standing on the centre line in front of an altar. It is the position from which people bow, so somebody is probably waiting behind you. Step to one side.

Sitting on the kneeling cushion. This is the most common visitor error in Chinese temples generally, because the cushion looks exactly like something to rest on. Get up and use a step or a courtyard bench.

Talking at outdoor volume indoors. Stone and timber halls carry sound extremely well, and a conversation that feels quiet near the door is audible throughout. Fewer words rather than quieter ones.

Letting a phone make a noise. Set it to silent at the gate, not when it rings.

Blocking a doorway to take a photograph or check a map. Doorways are narrow, often the only route, and standing in one stops the hall functioning. Step through, then stop.

Walking through the middle of a hall during a service, or moving around while one is happening. Take a position at the side and stay in it.

Touching things: a carving, an altar object, a painted column, an inscription. Accumulated contact does real damage. This is the category most worth training yourself out of, because the impulse is constant.

Eating inside a hall, including finishing something you started outside.

Genuinely resented

A short list of things that do cause real offence, and all of them are avoidable by decision rather than by knowledge.

Photographing a person at worship. Somebody kneeling, bowing or praying is doing something private in a public place, and a camera pointed at them is intrusive whatever the intention. This is the most frequent genuine offence committed by visitors at Chinese temples.

Photographing a service. Even where the hall otherwise permits photography, a rite in progress is the working activity of the resident community and not a performance.

Photographing clergy without asking. They are working and they are not attractions.

Posing on or with ritual equipment: standing on the kneeling cushion, leaning on the altar table, holding an incense burner, arranging a group photograph in front of an altar with your backs to the figure.

Treating a service as entertainment: talking through it, commenting on it audibly, imitating the movements, or filming it while smiling at the camera.

Smoking anywhere on a temple site. Beyond courtesy, these are timber buildings on a mountain, and fire is the standing threat to them.

Ignoring an instruction. If a sign or a person tells you not to do something and you continue, that is a decision rather than a mistake, and it is the only thing on these pages that anyone will treat as deliberate.

Mistakes that are actually safety problems

A separate category, because the consequence falls on you rather than on anybody's feelings.

Climbing on platforms, bases, walls, railings or architectural features to see or photograph something. Much of what looks climbable at Wudang has a considerable drop on the other side.

Walking backwards while framing a photograph. This is how visitors collide with altar tables, lamp stands, other people and, outdoors, edges.

Looking at a phone on steps. The stone is worn smooth, often wet, and the flights are long. Descent is where accidents happen, not the climb.

Stepping through a threshold without looking down. Thresholds are high, the light changes sharply on entry, and the drop on the far side is not always what you expect.

Underestimating the descent, the cold at altitude, or the time remaining before the last transport. These are covered properly in the planning section, and they cause more difficulty than etiquette ever does.

Carrying lit incense through a crowded hall with the burning end forward. Visitors burn each other's clothing this way regularly.

What actually happens when you get it wrong

Worth stating plainly, because the imagined consequence is always worse than the real one.

In the overwhelming majority of cases, nothing happens. Nobody says anything, because a minor error is not worth an interaction, and because staff and clergy see the same errors many times a day and have no interest in policing them.

Occasionally somebody will indicate that you should stop or move: a gesture, a word, a hand held up. This is information, not a rebuke. It is delivered briefly because it is meant briefly.

Very rarely, at a genuinely inappropriate moment, someone may be sharp with you. Even then, the interaction ends when you comply. Nobody follows it up, nothing is recorded, and you are not being asked to leave.

What does not happen: you are not ejected, you do not cause a scene, you do not offend anyone permanently, and nobody thinks about it after you have moved. The asymmetry between how large the moment feels to you and how small it is to everyone else is the single most useful thing to know.

How to recover

The technique has three steps and takes about two seconds.

Stop or move. If you are standing somewhere wrong, step aside. If you are doing something wrong, stop doing it. If you are holding something, put it down where you found it. Physical correction first, before anything verbal.

Acknowledge briefly. A small nod, or a short apology if you have the word, and that is all. One gesture, one word.

Continue. Carry on with your visit rather than leaving the hall in embarrassment. Leaving abruptly turns a two-second correction into an event and suggests you were doing something worse than you were.

The one thing not to do is escalate. Extended apology, repeated explanation, attempting to demonstrate that you understand, or trying to compensate with a donation all draw far more attention than the original error and prolong exactly the disruption you are apologising for.

The apology problem

This deserves its own note because it is the most common way visitors make a small thing larger.

Visitors who are anxious about propriety tend to over-apologise, and the over-apology is more disruptive than the mistake. A long apology in the middle of a hall requires the other person to stop what they are doing, respond to you, and manage your discomfort. That is a bigger imposition than standing in the wrong place was.

There is also a mismatch of register. Chinese social convention in this setting handles small errors quickly and without ceremony, and an elaborate emotional apology reads as strange rather than as respectful. Brief is correct.

The same applies to compensating gestures. Putting money in a donation box because you feel bad is fine if you wanted to give anyway, and pointless as an atonement, since nobody is keeping account.

The general principle for the whole section: when unsure, choose the quieter response.
