Two of them are among the largest ever built here, one is the oldest establishment of consequence, and all of them are quiet. This group exists because the standard visit misses them entirely, and because for some readers they will be the best part of the mountain.

What outlying actually means

It does not mean small, late or unimportant. It means off the axis.

The Ming programme composed its principal buildings along the approach to the summit, and the modern visitor operation follows that line with an entrance, vehicle stages and a cable car. Anything not on that line falls outside the flow, regardless of its historical significance. Two of the palaces discussed here stand near the foot of the range rather than up it, which puts them physically close to the town and yet outside the circuit that most people buy a ticket for. The third sits in a valley at some distance, and reaching it is a deliberate excursion rather than a detour.

So the word describes a relationship to the modern route, not a judgement about the buildings. The largest complex of the entire Ming campaign is in this group.

Why nobody goes

Four reasons, none of them about the merits of the places themselves.

The visitor system funnels people onto one line, and stepping off it requires separate arrangements that most visitors never learn about. Time is short for nearly everyone, and the summit is the item people feel they cannot miss. Two of these sites are substantially ruined, and ruins photograph poorly and are hard to interpret without help, so tour operators have little incentive to include them. And the most remote of the three is far enough away that a visit consumes most of a day for a site that has no famous single object in it.

The result is a genuine anomaly: places of the first importance receiving a small fraction of the attention given to a bronze hall you queue to see.

Why they are worth the trouble

Several things are available here that the central route cannot give you.

Quiet, first and most simply. You can spend an hour at these sites without being moved along, without competing for a view, and without the commercial layer that gathers at the busy nodes. That changes what you notice.

Scale, second, and paradoxically it is clearer in ruin. On the axis, the buildings block your view of the plan; at a ruined site you can stand on the central line and see the whole layout at once, walk its full length, and grasp the size of the enterprise in a way no standing complex allows. The largest palace of the Ming programme communicates its ambition better as foundations than it would as a working temple full of visitors.

Authenticity, third. Masonry survives where timber does not, so at these sites a high proportion of what you touch is genuinely early: terraces, platforms, column bases, drainage, paving, gateways, retaining walls and steles. On the central route the stone is authentic and the buildings on it are often not; here there is less to distract you from the stone.

And history, fourth. The oldest important foundation on the mountain is in this group, and it takes you back before the Ming to the period when state interest here began.

What a ruin can teach you

Ruined sites are more instructive than they look, once you know what to read.

Column bases tell you the size of the building that stood on them, the span of its bays and therefore its rank. Terrace heights and the number of steps between them tell you how the axis was staged. Drainage channels and culverts show how a builder handled the real enemy of Chinese architecture, which is water rather than time. Gateway thresholds mark where enclosure walls ran even when the walls are gone. Empty platforms tell you what has been lost, and their proportions tell you roughly what it was.

The habit to acquire is to read the ground rather than looking for something to photograph. Half an hour spent walking a ground plan slowly will teach you more about how these complexes worked than a fast pass through three standing halls.

Why they stand where they do

Their positions are not accidents of leftover ground, and understanding the logic makes them far more interesting than a list of sites.

The two near the foot of the range are there because that is where a pilgrimage begins and where an administration sits. A great palace at the entrance to a sacred mountain does work that a summit building cannot: it receives arrivals, houses officials and clergy, stores supplies, accommodates crowds at festivals, and states the scale of the enterprise to anyone who has just walked up from the river. Putting the largest complex of the whole campaign at the bottom rather than the top looks odd only if you assume that height equals importance. In administrative terms the gate of an institution is at least as significant as its innermost hall.

The remote valley foundation is there for the opposite reason. It occupies a site chosen long before the Ming for seclusion and for its water, in the period when what mattered was being difficult to reach. Its position records an earlier idea of what a religious site was for — a place to withdraw to, not a place to receive visitors at.

So this group contains both ends of the mountain's history in one comparison: the logic of retreat and the logic of institution, standing a valley apart.

Practical points

Some structural guidance, with no figures, times or fares.

Getting to these sites is a separate matter from the main ascent, and arrangements differ for each; the two near the foot are the easier proposition, the remote valley site needs planning and a return arrangement thought through in advance. Ask locally on the day rather than relying on anything published, including this page. Facilities at all three are limited or absent, so carry water and food and do not assume you can buy either. Interpretation is thin, and at the ruined sites nearly all of it is in Chinese, so read about them beforehand if you want the visit to mean anything.

Weather matters differently here. These are lower or more sheltered sites, so they are usable when the summit is closed in, which makes them a genuinely good answer to a bad-weather day rather than a consolation prize.

An honest caveat

Do not go expecting drama. There is no bronze hall, no cliff-edge, no view of peaks falling away beneath you. At two of these sites a substantial part of the experience is looking at foundations and imagining a building, and if that does not appeal to you, you will be bored and should not spend the day.

Be honest with yourself about which kind of visitor you are. Someone whose interest is architecture, planning, history or simply being somewhere quiet will find these places the highlight of a stay. Someone who wants spectacle will find them empty in the wrong sense. Neither response is a failure of taste, and it is better to decide accurately than to travel for an hour and be disappointed.

Which one to choose

If you have time for only one, choose by interest rather than by convenience.

For the sheer scale of the Ming enterprise and the best lesson in reading a ground plan, take the largest palace at the foot. For the martial arts connection and for the most extraordinary conservation story on the mountain — a building burned and then physically lifted to escape a reservoir — take the palace associated with Zhang Sanfeng, which is also the quickest of the three to see. For the deepest history, the strongest sense of seclusion and the most complete break from the tourist operation, take the remote valley foundation, and give it most of a day.

If you have two days on the mountain, the standard advice is one day on the axis and one day out here. Almost everyone who does that reports the second day as the better one.

The three pages

Each site has its own page: the largest complex of the programme, now substantially ruined, with its imperial steles; the palace built in honour of Zhang Sanfeng, which burned and was then raised some fifteen metres to escape rising water; and the oldest important foundation on the mountain, remote, quiet and the hardest to reach. Each covers what is there, what survives, why it matters and the practicalities of that specific place.

Sources and limits. Historical significance and dating follow the mountain's gazetteers and published archaeological and conservation material. Descriptions of condition reflect that material and reported observation, and the state of ruined sites changes as excavation, consolidation and reconstruction proceed. Access to all three depends on arrangements that alter without notice, so no routes, times, fares or opening details are given; confirm locally on the day.

Key points

Outlying means off the modern visitor axis, not small, late or unimportant; the largest
