Song Dynasty Tea Whisking Experience 茶艺体验课 · 宋代点茶体验

This workshop introduces diancha 點茶, a method of preparing powdered tea associated especially with elite tea culture during the Song dynasty. Participants learn about the period’s sources and aesthetics, handle the tools and practise whisking a bowl under guidance.

Historical context

During the Song dynasty (960–1279), finely ground tea was placed in a bowl, combined with hot water and whisked into a pale froth. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art explains that dark-glazed Jian ware bowls became closely connected with this method: their colour made the light foam easier to see, including during tea contests.

Diancha belonged to a larger world of tea production, ceramics, connoisseurship and social exchange. This workshop draws on surviving objects and historical descriptions while recognising that materials and modern conditions cannot reproduce every Song-period detail.

What happens in the workshop

Participants become familiar with the bowl and whisk, learn to portion and prepare powdered tea, add water in stages and practise the angle, rhythm and control needed to form an even foam. Observation and tasting help connect changes in technique with texture, aroma and appearance.

How the practice may help

Whisking tea can develop hand coordination, patience and attention to small physical changes. Placing the technique beside Song ceramics and tea culture also builds historical and material literacy. The value of the session is educational, sensory and social rather than medical; hot water must be handled carefully, and people sensitive to caffeine should check suitability before taking part.
