A summer downpour fills the sky-well of an old timber house near Wudang Mountain, and for a while there is nothing to do but stand under the eaves and listen.
The rain arrived the way summer rain does in these hills: suddenly, loudly, and all at once. In an old courtyard house, there is nowhere for it to hide. The roofs catch it and pour it inward, the sky-well turns into a curtain of falling water, and the flagstones below go dark and bright at the same time.
This is the old logic of the courtyard house. The house does not shut the weather out; it makes a small opening for heaven in the middle of daily life and lets the seasons come down through it. Rain gathers from the four roofs and returns to the centre — into the stone basin, around the potted plants, along the shallow channels the builders cut for exactly this day.
Under the eaves, a red lantern sways a little. The plants take the downpour the way plants always do, greener by the minute. The stone basin fills. Nobody sweeps, nobody hurries. Whatever was planned for this hour has been postponed by the sky.
Perhaps that is why listening to rain has been counted a small practice of its own for so long. Nothing needs to be understood or improved. You stand under the eaves, the water does the moving, and the mind — with nothing left to arrange — slowly settles, like the courtyard itself: open to what falls, and quiet underneath it.
