Circle Walking and the Eight Palm Changes

Circle walking is what makes baguazhang unmistakable, and it is also the part most often mystified. Descriptions of it tend towards the atmospheric — circulating energy, following the pattern of heaven — when what is actually happening is a specific and demanding piece of physical training that can be described precisely.

This page describes it precisely. It covers the step, the two turning actions everything is built from, the upper body, what the practice develops, and how the palm changes are constructed on top of it.
The original name
A useful piece of evidence sits in the terminology. Dong Haichuan is said to have called what he taught the turning palm, a plain descriptive name for what the practitioner does. The name referring to the eight trigrams came into general use later.
This fits the argument made on our page about the Yijing: the practice came first and the cosmological framework was fitted to it afterwards. The founder named his art after its most obvious physical feature.
The circle
The practitioner walks a circle, usually somewhere between two and four paces across, keeping the body oriented towards the centre rather than towards the direction of travel.
The traditional convention is eight steps to complete a circuit, which is where the correspondence to the eight trigrams is usually located. In practice the number varies with the size of the circle and the length of the practitioner's legs, and treating eight as a requirement produces awkward walking.
The circle is not a floor pattern to be traced. It is a device that forces a permanent asymmetry: the inside leg and the outside leg are doing different jobs at every moment, and the torso is permanently rotated relative to the hips. Walking in a straight line does not produce these conditions, which is why the circle is not decorative.
The step
The characteristic step is described as wading through mud. The foot lifts only slightly, travels forward close to the ground, and sets down flat rather than heel first.
Three things follow from this. The head does not rise and fall, so the practitioner's height stays constant throughout — this is the single easiest thing to check in your own practice and in someone else's. The weight can be withdrawn at any point in the step, because the foot is never committed to a heel strike. And the sole arrives ready to grip or to turn, which matters for the direction changes.
It is much harder than ordinary walking and considerably slower to become natural. Most beginners bob visibly for the first several months.
Toe-in and toe-out
This is the most useful technical content on the page, because these two actions are the basis of everything the art does with footwork.
The toe-in step sets the foot down with the toes angled inward, across the body's line. The toe-out step sets it down with the toes angled outward. Alternating them turns the body: a toe-in followed by a toe-out rotates you through a large angle in two steps without any loss of stability, and reverses your direction of travel.
Every palm change is built from a combination of these. Every evasion around an opponent uses them. If you understand toe-in and toe-out and can do them without disturbing your balance or your height, you have the mechanical basis of baguazhang footwork. If you cannot, no amount of learning palm changes will help, because the changes are just these two steps with the arms doing something.
They are also the source of the art's main injury risk, discussed below.
The upper body
While the feet walk the circle, the torso turns towards the centre and the arms are held in a fixed posture, typically with the leading arm extended towards the centre at about shoulder height and the rear hand near the leading elbow.
The requirements are familiar from the other internal arts: shoulders sunk, elbows dropped, chest slightly contained, back extended, no tension in the neck. The specifically baguazhang requirement is the twist — the torso rotates towards the centre against the direction the hips are travelling, producing a wound-up condition through the waist that is the source of the art's power.
The gaze is directed past the leading hand towards the centre of the circle. This trains the practitioner to keep an opponent in view while travelling around them, which is precisely the combat problem the art is organised around.
Height varies deliberately. Practice at a high posture is used for beginners and for endurance; a low posture, with the thighs approaching horizontal, is far more demanding and is where the leg strength is actually built.
What walking develops
Four things, and they are worth separating because they improve at different rates.
Leg endurance and strength, which come fastest and are simply a consequence of holding a posture while moving for a long time. Postural stability under rotation, meaning the ability to keep the structure intact while the torso is twisted, which takes considerably longer. The habit of continuous movement, so that standing still stops feeling like the default. And peripheral awareness, since you are watching a point you are not walking towards.
The claim sometimes made that circle walking by itself produces fighting ability is not true. It builds the physical platform the art requires. Applications have to be trained separately, against people.
The single palm change
The single palm change is the first and most important of the changes, and everything else is a variation on it.
Its function is to reverse the direction of travel. Walking one way around the circle, the practitioner executes a sequence — toe-in, turn, the arms exchanging position, toe-out — and emerges walking the other way, still facing the centre, with the other arm leading.
Described that way it sounds trivial. Done correctly it requires that height, balance, structure and the inward twist all survive a complete reversal of direction, which is difficult, and it is where all the faults in your walking become visible.
Practitioners commonly say that the single change contains the whole art. This is the sort of remark that sounds like mysticism and is actually a technical observation: the change contains the two steps, the reversal, the arm exchange and the maintenance of structure, which is the complete set of problems the art poses.
The eight changes
Built onto the single change is a set of eight, though the number and the content differ between branches and the names vary.
They are not eight techniques. Each is a pattern of body organisation which reverses or reorients the practitioner and which, depending on how it is expressed and where the opponent is, can produce a strike, a lock, a throw or an evasion. A single change may have a dozen recognised applications.
This is why baguazhang cannot be learned from a list. The changes are generative rather than prescriptive, and knowing the sequence of a change tells you very little about what it is for.
Beyond the eight, many branches teach linear sets — often organised as sixty-four — which extract the applications from the changes and drill them off the circle. These are where the art's combat vocabulary is made explicit.
How much walking, and for how long
Traditional accounts of training volume are extreme, and it is worth knowing what to make of them.
Older practitioners describe walking for an hour or more at a stretch, and stories circulate of masters who walked the circle for several hours daily over decades. Some of this is certainly exaggeration in the usual direction, but the underlying point is sound: the qualities circle walking develops respond to accumulated time more than to intensity, and there is no shortcut.
A realistic starting figure is a few minutes in each direction, extended gradually. The relevant measure is not how long you can walk but how long you can walk without the posture deteriorating, which is a much shorter time and the only figure worth counting.
The practice is also unusual in that it can be continued indefinitely without the diminishing returns typical of a fixed exercise. Practitioners with decades behind them report that walking continues to produce changes, largely because the standard they are holding themselves to keeps rising.
Errors, and the knee problem
The common faults are easy to name. Bobbing, from lifting the feet. Leaning into or away from the circle instead of remaining upright. Letting the hips rise on one side. Twisting the neck rather than the torso, which achieves the appearance of the posture without the substance. Walking too fast, which hides everything. And letting the arms sag as fatigue sets in, which is when the posture stops training anything.
The serious concern is the knees. Toe-in and toe-out steps place the foot at an angle to the direction of travel while the torso is rotated and the body is loaded, which applies real torque at the knee joint. Done with the knee tracking outside the line of the foot, or done in a low posture before the supporting strength exists, this causes injuries, and baguazhang practitioners report them.
The protections are ordinary: keep the knee aligned over the foot, do not adopt low postures before you can hold higher ones comfortably, build duration gradually, and stop when the alignment starts to fail rather than pushing through. A teacher who treats knee pain as something to endure is giving bad advice.
