Everything on it describes mechanics — how a body produces, transmits and receives force — and almost all of it can be tested with a partner in a few minutes. Song, Rooting and Whole-Body Power

Three ideas do most of the work: song, usually translated as relaxation; rooting, the connection to the ground; and whole-body power, the organisation that lets the two combine. They are not separate accomplishments. Each is a precondition for the others, which is why progress in these arts tends to be slow and then sudden.

Song: what relaxation actually means

The instruction to relax is the first one you receive and the last one you understand. It does not mean going soft, and it does not mean using no strength. It means removing tension that is not doing useful work.

Consider standing upright. Holding that position requires some muscular activity, but far less than most people use. Untrained standing typically involves a braced lower back, lifted shoulders, a clenched jaw and gripping toes, none of which contributes to staying upright. Song is the progressive removal of that surplus, so that the skeleton carries the load and the muscles do only what the skeleton cannot.

This is harder than it sounds for a specific reason: surplus tension is invisible from the inside. It feels like normal. You generally discover it only when someone points it out or when it releases and you notice the difference afterwards. This is why the internal arts rely so heavily on a teacher's hands and on very slow movement — both are ways of making habitual tension perceptible.

The two failure modes

Between correct song and its two failures there is not much room, and the tradition names both.

Stiffness is the failure of too much. The practitioner braces, the joints lock, force cannot pass through the body, and any incoming pressure is met at the point of contact rather than distributed. Stiff people feel strong and are easy to move, because a rigid structure can be levered.

Collapse is the failure of too little. The practitioner releases everything, the structure folds under pressure, and there is nothing to transmit force along. Collapsed people feel soft and are also easy to move, because there is nothing there.

The correct state feels like neither. It is often described as being like a hanging chain — no rigidity anywhere, but complete connection from one end to the other, and no slack. A chain cannot be levered and it does not fold, but it is entirely relaxed.

Peng: what keeps song from becoming collapse

The quality that distinguishes relaxation from limpness has its own name, peng, and it is one of the most poorly translated terms in the field. It is usually rendered “ward off,” which makes it sound like a blocking technique. It is not a technique; it is a condition of the body maintained throughout practice.

Peng is an outward, buoyant, expansive quality — the feeling of a structure that is filled rather than merely upright, of joints that are open rather than compressed. A common image is an inflated ball or an inner tube: yielding to pressure, returning to shape, offering resistance that increases smoothly rather than suddenly.

Physically, what is being described is a body maintaining slight expansion at every joint, with the connective tissue under gentle uniform load rather than slack in some places and tight in others. It is the reason a competent practitioner can be soft to the touch and still difficult to compress.

Rooting: the path to the ground

Rooting is widely misunderstood as heaviness or immovability. It is neither. It is the ability to conduct force into the ground rather than absorb it in the body.

When someone pushes you, the force has to go somewhere. If your structure is broken at some joint — a collapsed hip, a lifted shoulder, a bent lower back — the force is absorbed there, that joint has to be held by muscle, and you are moved. If the structure is continuous from the point of contact to the rear foot, the force passes through you into the floor, the floor pushes back, and you are not moved.

This is ordinary physics, and it can be demonstrated in a minute. Have someone push steadily on your shoulder while you stand naturally; then adjust one thing at a time — drop the shoulder, release the hip, let the knee unlock — and feel the point at which the push stops being a burden and starts feeling like it is going into the floor. Nothing mystical is required to explain the change, and the change is unmistakable.

What rooting cannot do

Because rooting is impressive to feel, it attracts extravagant claims, and it is worth being clear about its limits.

Rooting resists force directed along a line that reaches the ground. It does nothing against force applied at right angles to that line, which is why a well-rooted person can still be swept, tripped or pulled off balance sideways with very little effort. Skilled practitioners exploit exactly this: rather than push harder against a root, you change the angle.

Rooting also depends on the surface. On ice, sand or a moving platform it largely disappears. And it requires time to establish; against a fast, committed strike there is often no opportunity to set it.

Demonstrations in which a rooted master cannot be moved by several students pushing are usually pushing along the one line the root is built for. That is a real skill, but it is not the same as being hard to move.

Whole-body power and the kinetic chain

The classical formulation is that power is rooted in the feet, issued through the legs, directed by the waist and expressed in the hands. Modern biomechanics describes the same thing as a kinetic chain: force generated by the large proximal muscles and the ground reaction, then transferred sequentially through the body to a distal segment, each link adding to the total.

The same principle governs a boxer's cross, a baseball pitch and a golf swing. There is nothing culturally specific about it. What is distinctive in the internal arts is the degree of attention paid to eliminating leaks — points in the chain where a joint gives way, absorbs energy and reduces what arrives at the hand.

The related maxim is that when one part moves, no part does not move. This is often quoted mystically; it is a straightforward instruction. If the arm moves while the torso stays fixed, the arm is working alone and the power available is only what the arm can generate. Whole-body power simply means the whole body participates in the movement.

The six harmonies

The traditional checklist for whole-body organisation is the six harmonies, and it is genuinely useful because it is specific.

The three external harmonies are hand with foot, elbow with knee, and shoulder with hip. These are coordination requirements: the paired joints should move together and arrive together. A movement in which the hand arrives before the foot has settled is a movement without whole-body power, and this is easy to see and easy to correct.

The three internal harmonies are heart-mind with intent, intent with qi, and qi with force. In plainer terms: you should want to do the thing, the intention should be clear and specific, and the body should express it without a gap. The practical content is about hesitation and divided attention, which show up in movement as a fractional delay.

Spiralling

The internal arts, particularly Chen taijiquan and baguazhang, emphasise rotation. Movement is described as spiralling or reeling rather than as travelling in straight lines, with the limbs turning about their own axis as they extend.

Three things are gained. Rotation converts an incoming linear force into a tangential one, which deflects it with less effort than opposing it. It lengthens the path over which force can be applied, so that power builds gradually rather than arriving as a single impact. And it keeps the joints from reaching the locked end of their range, where structure is strong but adaptability is lost.

Watch a competent practitioner's forearm during an extension and you will see it rotate. Watch a beginner's and you will not.

How these are trained, and how long it takes

Three methods do most of the work. Standing practice, holding a posture for extended periods, is the primary tool for finding surplus tension, because when nothing is moving the only thing to attend to is what you are unnecessarily doing. Slow form practice trains the same qualities in motion, and the slowness exists precisely to prevent momentum from covering up structural faults. Partner work — push hands above all — tests everything against an external force that does not cooperate.

As for timescale: basic structural awareness takes months. Reliable rooting under moderate pressure takes a few years of regular practice. Whole-body power that survives speed, surprise and a resisting opponent takes considerably longer, and many practitioners never reach it, usually because they stop doing the boring parts.

None of this requires believing anything in particular. It requires standing still for longer than is comfortable, moving more slowly than feels productive, and letting someone push you until you find out where your structure fails.
