The practical problems are predictable: a document dated only by cycle year does not tell you the century, an intercalary month has the same name as the month it follows, and dates near a solar term boundary or near midnight need care. Reign-era dates add their own difficulty, since an era did not always change at the new year, so the first year of an era may cover only part of a cycle year.
Excavated calendars and inscriptions
Some of the best evidence for how the cycle actually functioned comes from material that was never meant to be read as literature. Oracle bone inscriptions record days by stem and branch in enormous quantity and stable format. Bamboo and wooden strips recovered from tombs and frontier garrisons include working calendars, administrative registers and daybooks that show officials and ordinary households using the system for scheduling and for judging whether a day suited a task. Bronze inscriptions, tomb epitaphs, land deeds and temple stelae supply dated points across the whole span. Modern Chinese scholarship
The most detailed work on the calendar and the cycle is in Chinese and is largely unavailable in translation. There is a long tradition of calendrical studies within the histories themselves, since each dynastic history contains treatises on the calendar and on astronomy, and these are primary sources for how the system was understood by those maintaining it. Twentieth-century scholarship produced critical chronologies, concordance tables and detailed studies of the oracle bone calendar. Nathan Sivin wrote with care on Chinese astronomy and on the relationship between calendar reform and cosmology, and is reliable about what the evidence supports. Work on the excavated daybooks, notably by Donald Harper and others working on the Qin and Han manuscripts, is where the applied side of the calendar has been most illuminated recently. On the animals and their origins the literature is inconclusive, and confident accounts should be treated with suspicion.

The almanac deserves separate mention because it is the form in which most people actually met this system. Printed annually and consulted by households rather than specialists, it lists each day with its stem and branch, the solar terms, and judgments about what the day suits. As a historical source it is unusually valuable, since it records what ordinary users were told rather than what theorists argued, and the surviving series show how the content changed over time. Technical manuals for fate calculation and date selection are the other body of practical literature. Both are dry reading and rarely translated, but they are where you see the system doing its daily work, and they make clear how much of the tradition consisted of procedure rather than doctrine.
