The system of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches is among the oldest continuously used counting methods in the world. Its written record reaches back more than three thousand years, and the cycle it produces—sixty units repeating without end—has structured the Chinese sense of time from the Bronze Age to the present day. To trace its history is to follow one of the deepest continuities in Chinese civilization.

Origins and History of the Chinese Sexagenary Cycle

The oracle-bone evidence

The earliest firm evidence comes from the oracle-bone inscriptions of the late Shang dynasty, roughly the thirteenth to eleventh centuries BCE. These inscriptions, carved onto turtle shells and ox scapulae used in royal divination, record dates using the full sexagenary cycle. Complete tables of the sixty binomial terms have been found among the Shang materials, showing that by this period the system was already fully formed and in routine administrative use. Diviners numbered the days with Stem-Branch pairs, and the king's ten-day week—the xun (旬) (旬)—was counted off by the ten Stems. That the Shang possessed a complete, ordered list of all sixty combinations tells us the framework was mature well before our first surviving records of it.

Counting days in the Shang

In the Shang period the primary function of the cycle was to count days. Each day received one of the sixty Stem-Branch names, and the sequence rolled forward continuously, one day after another, indifferent to the length of months or years. This day-count is remarkable for its unbroken regularity. Because it is a simple ongoing tally, unaffected by the astronomical adjustments that complicate months and years, historians regard the sexagenary day-count as one of the longest reliably continuous records of timekeeping known anywhere. Chinese scholars traditionally held that it ran without interruption from high antiquity, and while the very earliest stretch cannot be independently checked, the count is demonstrably consistent across the long span for which records survive.

Two separate series joined together

The ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches almost certainly began as two separate counting series before they were combined. The ten Stems align naturally with the ten-day week, a unit of time the Shang clearly recognized. The twelve Branches correspond to a twelvefold division that would later be tied to the months of the year and to the twelve double-hours of the day. When the two series are paired and advanced together—first Stem with first Branch, second with second, and so on—they do not exhaust their combinations until sixty steps have passed, because sixty is the lowest common multiple of ten and twelve. Only even-numbered Branches meet odd-numbered Stems and vice versa, so half of the theoretically possible pairings never occur; the cycle therefore contains sixty terms rather than one hundred and twenty.

Widening use under the Zhou

Over the following centuries the applications of the cycle widened. By the Zhou dynasty and into the Warring States period, the Branches had become firmly associated with the months, and a system emerged for numbering years as well. The full maturity of Stem-Branch year-counting is usually placed in the Han dynasty. During the Han, scholars folded the sexagenary framework together with the developing theories of yin-yang and the Five Phases, so that each Stem and Branch acquired a phase-association, a yin or yang polarity, and a web of correspondences to directions, seasons, colors, and organs. It is in this Han synthesis that Ganzhi took on the rich symbolic character it carries in the later metaphysical arts, rather than functioning purely as a neutral tally.

The twelve animals

The twelve Earthly Branches also became linked with the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. This pairing—rat with the first Branch, ox with the second, and so on—appears in documents from the Han period and was widespread by early medieval times. The animal signs offered a popular and memorable face for what was otherwise a technical counting device, and it is largely through the zodiac that the Branches remain familiar in everyday life today. It is worth noting that the animals are a later overlay on the older Branch system, not its origin: the Branches came first, and the animals were attached to them.

Legendary attributions

A persistent tradition credits the invention of the cycle to legendary antiquity. Later texts attribute its creation to figures such as the minister Da Nao under the Yellow Emperor, who is said to have devised the Stems and Branches to mark the years. Accounts of this kind belong to the layer of foundational mythology that Chinese culture attached to many of its institutions; they express reverence for the antiquity of the system rather than documented history. The honest historical statement is that the cycle is genuinely ancient—attested in the Shang oracle bones—but that we cannot name its inventor or fix the moment of its creation.

How years came to be named

The way years were named also evolved. Alongside the Stem-Branch method, the early empire experimented with other schemes, including a set of elaborate Jupiter-cycle names tied to the roughly twelve-year orbit of the planet Jupiter through the sky. Because Jupiter's period is close to twelve years, its motion offered a natural way to divide the heavens into twelve stations, which resonated with the twelve Branches. In time the simpler and more regular Stem-Branch count prevailed for ordinary year-numbering, and the Jupiter associations survived mainly as an antiquarian and astrological layer. By the later imperial period the sixty-year cycle of Stem-Branch year-names was the standard means of dating years within a reign.

Reign eras and the cycle together

For most of imperial history, years were identified primarily by reign-era titles—the nianhao (年号) (年号) chosen by each emperor—with the Stem-Branch designation added to specify the year within the sixty-year round. A date might therefore be given as a particular year of a named era, further pinned down by its jiazi term. This double system allowed precise dating: the era title located the period in dynastic history, while the sexagenary term fixed the year within its cycle. Many well-known events in Chinese history are still referred to by their Stem-Branch year-names, a usage that remains common in historical writing.

Survival into the present

The cycle survived the end of the imperial system and continues in use today. The traditional lunisolar calendar, still consulted for festivals, agricultural timing, and the choice of auspicious dates, retains Stem-Branch designations for years, months, days, and hours. The lunar New Year is popularly identified by its zodiac animal, which is simply the Branch of the year wearing its familiar animal face. In this way a counting device first recorded on Shang oracle bones remains a living part of contemporary culture.

Why the history matters for the arts

Understanding this history matters for the metaphysical arts, because those arts inherit the fully developed Han-era system, symbolism and all. When a practitioner of the Four Pillars reads a birth chart, or a date-selection expert weighs the qualities of a day, they are working with Stems and Branches that carry the phase-associations and correspondences assembled over the Han and later periods. The neutral counting cycle of the Shang and the symbol-laden cycle of the metaphysical tradition are the same skeleton clothed in different meanings, and the historical layering explains why the same terms function both as a plain calendar and as a rich interpretive language.
