Sources on training are different from sources on history or philosophy, because the question they have to answer is practical: does this help someone train better. That criterion excludes a good deal of well-regarded writing and admits some material that martial arts practitioners rarely look at. This page describes what is available and what each body of work is actually good for.

How to read this area
Four bodies of material bear on training, and they almost never appear together. The traditional texts of the arts themselves say what should happen. The Republican-era manuals record how the arts were taught when they were first written down. Modern movement science explains why some of the traditional methods work and where they can be improved. And ethnographic accounts describe what training in these traditions is actually like from the inside. A reader who uses only one of the four gets a distorted picture.
The traditional texts as training documents
The taiji classics, the xingyi treatises and comparable material are worth reading, but it is important to be clear about what they are. They are extremely terse, they assume the reader is already training under a teacher, and they were written as reminders rather than as instructions. A line about the waist commanding the movement is a note to someone who already knows what that feels like.
Read as training manuals they are almost useless, and students who try to derive practice from them usually end up projecting their existing understanding onto the text. Read as a record of what the tradition considered essential — as a list of priorities — they are valuable, because they show which few things generations of teachers thought worth writing down.
The Republican-era manuals
The publishing wave of the 1910s to 1930s produced the first books written to teach rather than to remind, with photographs, numbered sequences and explanatory text. They are the earliest evidence of these arts being organised into curricula, and they document the moment when transmission shifted from apprenticeship to something that could be printed.
Their value for a modern reader is partly historical and partly practical: they show what was considered the core content before the standardisation of the later twentieth century, and the differences from what is taught now are often instructive. Scholarly surveys of this manual literature exist and are a good entry point, since the manuals themselves are mostly untranslated.
Movement science
This is the body of work most relevant to training and least read by practitioners. Research on motor learning bears directly on how forms should be practised, how much repetition is useful, and why variable practice generally beats endless identical repetition. Work on proprioception explains what standing practice is doing. Research on stretching has changed the sensible ordering of a training session. Strength and conditioning literature addresses the tension between traditional suspicion of weight training and the obvious conditioning content of traditional curricula.
None of this replaces the tradition, and it does not explain what a good teacher's hands do. But a practitioner who understands a little about how skills are actually acquired will make better decisions about how to spend their practice time, and will be less inclined to treat a training method as sacred when it is simply one option among several.
Health research
A large clinical literature now exists on taijiquan and related practices, and it needs careful reading because its quality is uneven and its findings are frequently overstated in both directions.
The best-supported finding by a considerable margin concerns balance and the prevention of falls in older adults, where the evidence is reasonably strong and the effect is meaningful. There is also reasonable evidence for benefits in several chronic conditions, generally modest in size and comparable to other forms of moderate exercise. Many other claims rest on small studies, short follow-up periods and weak control conditions.
The sensible position is that these practices are a good form of moderate exercise with particular advantages for balance, and that this is a substantial and useful finding which does not require any additional mechanism to explain. Systematic reviews from established evidence-appraisal organisations are more reliable than individual studies, and considerably more reliable than summaries produced by people with something to promote. Nothing here is a substitute for medical advice about a specific condition.
Safety and adverse effects
There is a small but growing research literature on adverse effects of intensive meditative and breathing practice, covering anxiety, sleep disturbance, dissociation and related difficulties. It is worth knowing about, because the traditional literature discusses the same phenomena in its own vocabulary and the modern work is more useful for deciding what to do about them.
The general finding is that such effects are uncommon, are associated with intensity and lack of supervision, and usually resolve when the practice is reduced. Anyone experiencing persistent difficulties should consult a doctor or mental health professional rather than only a teacher.
Ethnographic accounts
Anthropologists and scholars who trained seriously in China have written accounts of what these training environments are actually like — the social structure, the teacher-student relationship in practice, the gap between what is said and what is done. This material is unusually valuable precisely because it is written by people with divided loyalties, who are neither promoting nor debunking.
For anyone considering a long period of training in China, this is probably the most useful reading available, more so than any technical book. It describes the things that determine whether a training period goes well and that no school will tell you.
Practitioner training books
Books by experienced teachers on how to practise vary widely. The better ones are specific about what to do, honest about timescales, clear about what they cannot convey in print, and willing to distinguish tradition from fact. The weaker ones consist largely of principles restated, which is comfortable reading and changes nothing about what a reader does the next morning.
A simple test: does the book tell you what to do tomorrow, and how you would know whether it worked. Books that pass this test are rare and worth keeping.
Video
Video is more useful for training than text for obvious reasons, and it has a specific use beyond learning sequences: filming your own practice. Practitioners are consistently surprised by the gap between what they believe they are doing and what the recording shows, and this is the cheapest form of correction available to someone training alone. Comparing footage of yourself over intervals of six months is more informative than any amount of reading.
What is missing
There is almost no serious writing on the pedagogy of these arts — on how skilled teachers actually transmit what they transmit, which is arguably the most interesting question in the field. There is very little work bridging movement science and traditional method in a way that either side would accept. And there is no good account of how the standardisation of the twentieth century changed what was being taught, as opposed to what was being performed.
Keeping a training record
One source of information about training is generated by the practitioner and almost universally neglected: a written record of what was practised and what changed. It need not be elaborate. A few lines after each session noting what was worked on, what a teacher corrected, and anything that felt different is enough.
Its value comes from the unreliability of memory over the timescales these arts operate on. Progress is slow enough that a practitioner genuinely cannot recall what their stance felt like a year ago, which makes it easy to conclude either that nothing is happening or that everything has been solved. A record settles the question. It also catches the recurring correction — the fault a teacher has now mentioned on eleven separate occasions — which is exactly the thing a student is least likely to notice unaided.
A suggested order
Begin with an ethnographic account, which will give you a realistic picture of the environment. Add a general introduction to motor learning, which will change how you use practice time. Then read the traditional texts, which will make more sense once you have a framework for them. Health research is worth consulting if you have a specific reason. Practitioner training books come last and are most useful once you have enough experience to tell which ones are saying something.
Cautions
Be wary of health claims that go beyond the evidence, in either direction. Be wary of training advice presented as ancient wisdom when it is a twentieth-century pedagogical choice. Be wary of any source that treats a single method as the only correct one, since most disagreements in this area are between defensible alternatives. And be wary of your own preference for reading over training, which is a well-documented failure mode among people drawn to these arts.
