2. 六二：旅即次，怀其资，得童仆贞。

The wanderer reaches an inn, carrying his goods, and gains a steadfast young servant.

The traveller reaches lodging, keeps resources close, and gains a trustworthy helper. Temporary security rests on shelter, means, and reliable relationships.

3. 九三：旅焚其次，丧其童仆，贞厉。

The wanderer’s inn burns down; he loses his young servant. Steadfastness brings danger.

The lodging burns and the helper is lost. Harsh conduct toward those who support you destroys the traveller’s own base.

4. 九四：旅于处，得其资斧，我心不快。

The wanderer finds a place to stay and gains his means and an axe. My heart is not glad.

The traveller finds a place and obtains equipment, yet the heart is uneasy. Possessions cannot substitute for belonging.

5. 六五：射雉一矢亡，终以誉命。

He shoots a pheasant; one arrow is lost. In the end he gains praise and a mandate.

One arrow is lost in shooting a pheasant, but honour and appointment follow. A measured expenditure can establish credibility.

6. 上九：鸟焚其巢，旅人先笑后号咷。丧牛于易，凶。

The bird burns its nest. The wanderer laughs at first, then wails and weeps. He loses his ox through carelessness. Misfortune.

A bird’s nest burns; the traveller laughs first and weeps later, having carelessly lost the ox. Arrogance at the edge of belonging ends in homelessness.
