第一章 · 道可道，非常道

道可道，非常道。名可名，非常名。無名天地之始；有名萬物之母。故常無，欲以觀其妙；常有，欲以觀其徼。此兩者，同出而異名，同謂之玄。玄之又玄，眾妙之門。2. 經典英譯（James Legge, 1891）
“The Tao that can be trodden is not the enduring and unchanging Tao. The name that can be named is not the enduring and unchanging name. Conceived of as having no name, it is the Originator of heaven and earth; conceived of as having a name, it is the Mother of all things. Always without desire we must be found, if its deep mystery we would sound; but if desire always within us be, its outer fringe is all that we shall see. Under these two aspects, it is really the same. Together they are called the Mystery. Where the Mystery is the deepest is the gate of all that is subtle and wonderful.”

語言與概念能夠描述的，只是道的作用與現象，而非那永恆周流的本源整體。當內心放下分別與執念時（常無慾），我們能體會萬物靜默相通的本源玄妙；當我們帶著具體目標與分別心去觀察時（常有欲），我們看清的是事物各自的功用與邊界。二者同出一源，都是認識生命的門徑。
