Chapter 1 — The Tao Beyond Names

道可道，非常道；名可名，非常名。无名，天地之始；有名，万物之母。故常无欲，以观其妙；常有欲，以观其徼。此两者，同出而异名，同谓之玄。玄之又玄，众妙之门。

A way that can be stated is not the enduring Way. A name that can be named is not the enduring name. Without name is the beginning of heaven and earth; with name is the mother of the ten thousand things. Free from grasping, we may behold its subtlety; within desire, we may observe its boundaries. These two arise together but receive different names. Together they are called mysterious—mystery within mystery, the gateway of every subtle wonder.

Beginner’s guide

“Nameless” and “named” are not rival worlds. They are two ways of meeting the same reality. Before we classify an experience, it is open and difficult to possess. Once we name it, we can discuss it, use it, and organize our response. Trouble begins when we mistake the name for the whole thing.

This chapter suggests pausing before the label closes the situation. Use the name when it helps, but keep enough openness to notice what has changed and what the label cannot contain.
