Chapter 65 — Beyond Manipulative Cleverness

第六十五章 玄德深远

The language of making people ‘simple’ can sound like an argument for ignorance. In context, the target is manipulative cleverness—among rulers and people—that turns public life into a contest of loopholes, hidden strategies, and technical control. Simplicity means intelligible order, not denying education.

Chapter 65 — Beyond Manipulative Cleverness

Classical text

古之善为道者,非以明民,将以愚之。民之难治,以其智多。故以智治国,国之贼;不以智治国,国之福。知此两者亦稽式。常知稽式,是谓玄德。玄德深矣,远矣,与物反矣,然后乃至大顺。

Original rendering

Those of old who were skilled in the Tao did not use it to make people calculatingly clever, but to keep life simple. People become difficult to govern when clever manipulation multiplies. Therefore governing a state through scheming intelligence becomes the state’s harm; not governing through such intelligence becomes its blessing. Knowing these two is also a guiding pattern. Continually knowing the pattern is called profound virtue. Profound virtue is deep and far-reaching; it seems contrary to ordinary things, yet afterward arrives at great harmony.

Beginner’s guide

A respectful modern reading must distinguish wisdom from manufactured ignorance. Education, transparency, and critical thinking support people; opaque systems and elite games make dependence. The chapter asks intelligence to serve clarity rather than domination.

Key ideas

  • Cleverness becomes harmful when organised around manipulation.

  • Simple public systems can strengthen understanding and trust.

  • Profound virtue may reverse habits before restoring harmony.

Reading it in modern life

Explain rules in language ordinary people can use. Remove loopholes that reward insiders while keeping fair appeal available. Teach enough for independent judgment rather than using expertise to make others permanently dependent.

A question to carry

Is my knowledge making this system clearer for others, or giving me more ways to control it?
