Chapter 42 — Yin, Yang, and Harmony

道生一，一生二，二生三，三生万物。万物负阴而抱阳，冲气以为和。人之所恶，唯孤、寡、不谷，而王公以为称。故物或损之而益，或益之而损。人之所教，我亦教之：强梁者不得其死。吾将以为教父。

The Tao gives birth to One. One gives birth to Two. Two gives birth to Three. Three gives birth to the ten thousand things. The ten thousand things carry Yin and embrace Yang; through the blending breath they reach harmony. People dislike being orphaned, widowed, or unworthy, yet rulers use these terms for themselves. Thus things may be diminished and thereby increased, or increased and thereby diminished. What others teach, I also teach: the violently forceful do not meet a natural end. I will take this as the father of my teaching.

Beginner’s guide

Yin and Yang are complementary tendencies, not fixed moral sides and not rigid labels for men and women. Their harmony is dynamic: rest and action, structure and openness, receiving and expressing continually adjust one another. The lines on loss and gain show the same reversal in human life.

Reading it in modern life

Balance training with recovery and speaking with listening. When one tendency dominates, strengthen its complement rather than declaring either side absolutely good. In planning, include both expansion and consolidation so that growth does not consume its own foundation.
