Chapter 38 — The Descent from Tao to Ritual

第三十八章　上德不德

The opening of the Te Ching warns that virtue becomes shallow when it is constantly checking whether it looks virtuous. From spontaneous alignment, society descends through moral effort toward enforced ritual. Ritual is not condemned in every form; it becomes dangerous when outward compliance replaces trust and living substance.

Chapter 38 — The Descent from Tao to Ritual

上德不德，是以有德；下德不失德，是以无德。上德无为而无以为；下德为之而有以为。上仁为之而无以为；上义为之而有以为；上礼为之而莫之应，则攘臂而扔之。故失道而后德，失德而后仁，失仁而后义，失义而后礼。夫礼者，忠信之薄，而乱之首；前识者，道之华，而愚之始。是以大丈夫处其厚，不居其薄；处其实，不居其华。故去彼取此。

Highest virtue does not cling to being virtuous, and therefore has virtue. Lower virtue never lets go of the appearance of virtue, and therefore lacks it. Highest virtue acts without contrivance and without ulterior purpose; lower virtue acts with an intended display. Highest benevolence acts without ulterior purpose; highest righteousness acts with a purpose. Highest ritual acts, and when no one responds, rolls up its sleeves and pulls people into line. Thus when the Tao is lost, virtue appears; when virtue is lost, benevolence; when benevolence is lost, righteousness; when righteousness is lost, ritual. Ritual is the thinning of loyalty and trust and the beginning of disorder. Foreknowledge is the flower of the Tao and the beginning of folly. Therefore the mature person dwells in what is thick, not thin; in the fruit, not the flower—leaving one and taking the other.

Beginner’s guide

The sequence describes degrees of distance from direct alignment, not a licence to discard kindness, justice, or ceremony. When deeper trust is unavailable, rules may be necessary. The warning is to rebuild the roots instead of mistaking stricter performance for moral health.
