Chapter 41 — The Tao That Appears Contrary

上士闻道，勤而行之；中士闻道，若存若亡；下士闻道，大笑之。不笑不足以为道。故建言有之：明道若昧，进道若退，夷道若颣；上德若谷，广德若不足，建德若偷，质真若渝；大白若辱，大方无隅，大器晚成，大音希声，大象无形。道隐无名，夫唯道，善贷且成。

Original rendering

The highest student hears the Tao and practises diligently. The middle student hears it and seems now to keep it, now to lose it. The lowest student hears it and laughs loudly. Without such laughter, it would not be sufficient to be the Tao. Thus established sayings declare: the bright Tao seems dim; advancing in the Tao seems to retreat; the level Tao seems uneven. Highest virtue resembles a valley; broad virtue seems insufficient; established virtue seems weak; genuine substance seems changeable. Great purity seems stained; the great square has no corners; the great vessel matures late; the great sound is scarcely heard; the great image has no form. The Tao is hidden and nameless. Yet only the Tao is good at lending life and bringing it to completion.

Beginner’s guide

The paradoxes loosen our dependence on appearance. ‘The great vessel matures late’ is not permission to avoid work; it recognises that deep capacity often takes time. ‘No form’ does not mean nothing exists, but that the largest pattern cannot be confined to one visible shape.

Reading it in modern life

Do not judge a meditation, skill, or relationship only by dramatic early results. Allow foundations to mature before displaying them. When progress seems backward, ask whether you are losing direction or becoming honest about work that earlier confidence concealed.
