Chapter 39 — Rooted in the One
第三十九章 得一
The ‘One’ is not merely the number one. It is the coherence through which heaven is clear, earth stable, valleys receptive, living things alive, and leadership dependable. When each part forgets the whole that sustains it, apparent strength begins to split or dry out.

昔之得一者：天得一以清；地得一以宁；神得一以灵；谷得一以盈；万物得一以生；侯王得一以为天下贞。其致之也，谓天无以清将恐裂；地无以宁将恐发；神无以灵将恐歇；谷无以盈将恐竭；万物无以生将恐灭；侯王无以贞将恐蹶。故贵以贱为本，高以下为基。是以侯王自称孤、寡、不谷，此非以贱为本邪？非乎！故致数舆无舆。不欲琭琭如玉，珞珞如石。

Those who attained the One in ancient times: heaven attained the One and became clear; earth attained it and became settled; spirits attained it and became potent; valleys attained it and became full; the ten thousand things attained it and came alive; rulers attained it and became a steady standard for the world. Carried to the consequence: without clarity heaven might split; without stability earth might erupt; without potency spirits might fade; without fullness valleys might dry; without life things might perish; without steadiness rulers might fall. Therefore the honoured take the humble as root, and the high take the low as foundation. Rulers call themselves orphaned, widowed, and unworthy of grain—is this not taking humility as root? Indeed it is. Count every separate part of a carriage and there is no carriage. Do not seek to shine delicately like jade; remain plain and solid like stone.
Beginner’s guide
Unity here does not erase difference. It gives differences a shared ground. The political language teaches that status rests on ordinary people and conditions often treated as low. Forgetting that foundation makes honour fragile.
Key ideas
Coherence allows distinct parts to function together.
High position depends upon low and ordinary foundations.
Too much praise can separate a person from the whole that made success possible.
Reading it in modern life
Map the unseen work beneath a visible achievement: maintenance, care, cleaning, preparation, and trust. Give those foundations resources and recognition. When receiving praise, name the conditions and people without whom the result could not exist.
